Adding a second OIL TEMP Sensor for Innovate Data Logger
I am out of my wits....I searched nd googled and I must say this whole project is way more frustrating then I imagined.
I have a 79 930 and am not looking to modify or change the exisiting dash mounted VDO oil temp gauge. I am looking to add a second oil temp sensor somewhere in the flow to feed my innovate MTX gauge for data logging. The idea of drilling out the oil drain plug ais a non started.. I am open to ideas....please :D My winter project is adding the Adaptive Motorsports Fuse Panel, Running 2 dedicated fused power lines to the fuel pump relays, adding the 044 fuel pumps, upgrading the 965 diverter valve, and installing the Innovate MTX AFR, Boost, RPM, Volt, Fuel Pressure and Oil Temp. Everything is in order except for Oil Temp Sensor.....hoping someone over recalls a thread , DIY solution or product that migh help..... |
Can you put an adaptor with a port where the oil pressure switch goes in the triangle-of-death area? You would keep the oil pressure switch and get an oil temp reading from there.
|
I read that there is not a good flow of oil there....but thanks for pointing that out....certainly would be easy

Could you use a tee?
something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DG6YQM1/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_FKXDPYFRCZKPQPNYKMKB?_encodin g=UTF8&psc=1 might need some additional reducer / adapter. |
how about a head temp sensor. would that work for you
|
Is it not possible to take a second read off the factory temp sender?
|
They make a adapter block that goes where the oil pressure switch is located with a 1/8 npt fitting. I put a mechanical gauge there to check real time pressure vs. the gauge. You can always put a an adapter for a temp switch there.

All good suggestions.
Unfortunately I can not tap into the exisitng wire as per Innovate. A Tee where the Pressure sensor light mounted sounds like a good idea. There is this unused port near the triangle of death....has anyone used that blocking plate? Quote:

https://www.batinc.net/#PRODUCTS Scroll down that page to the Gauges and Adaptors image near the bottom right of the page. When you click on that image, a pdf document should open. Scroll down the pdf to page 2 and you'll see this adapter block. M10 x 1.0 is the thread size of the adapter that screws into the engine case to hold the low/no oil pressure switch warning light. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1642805393.jpg And for whatever it's worth, the threads in the engine case itself are M18 x 1.5 if you wanted to remove that adapter and install something else like an M18 x 1.5 male to NPT female threads like this steel adapter from McMaster Carr https://www.mcmaster.com/4936K157/ |

You guys know your stuff....thanks so much to all..... |

I have to disagree with the assessment that you need to add a second sensor. Are you using an SSI-4 logger?
The input to the innovate has a very, very, very high electric resistance. Adding a wire from the existing sensor/gauge circuit to the innovate logger would be no different that checking the operation of your oil temperature circuit with a dVm. |

I would prefer to tap in... |
mounting block
i added a mounting block with adaptor for a gauge but it could also be a mount for your oil pressure line
its the red part in the picture but for my life i cant recall which manufacturer i bought from, maybe someone can chime in if they know the supplier or you buy this part from host and discard the dial :-) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649451303.jpg |
Do you have a Carrera oil cooler in the right front fender?
If so, why not mount the temperature sensor in the cooler and use a manual switch for the fan (if installed). |
