Loosing Brake Fluid

I am loosing about half of the master of brake fluid a week. If the car is parked for a while there is a spot on the ground under the master. Is there a certain place I should look at first? Is there a fitting or hose that is known to leak? It is a 76 911S.

Thanks, Alex

Does the 76 have the master cylinder down under the belly pan like the 75? Non-boosted? Should be easy to remove the under-tray and check out the connections.

Do not drive your car!

Verify your hard lines to the cylinder are not leaking

Verify the switch on the MC is not leaking

Replace your MC, and be sure to clean out the area around/under it really well cuz the fluid is pretty corrosive stuff.

I just went thru a MC swap on my 80SC. Pretty easy job.

Are you seeing signs of leakage anywhere besides the master cylinder? Places such as the wheel calipers or the rubber sections of the brake lines? Do you have a firm pedal or do you have to pump it up to get it stiff? If you have a firm pedal and the only leaks are under the master cylinder the rubber grommets (there are two) which seal the lines (feed lines) from the brake fluid reservoir into the top of the master cylinder may have deteriorated. If so, you may only need to replace these two gromments (A-355-929-00 at $2.95 ea.); however to easily do this and make sure you get all the bits of the old grommets out of the master cylinder the MC should come off. This means a system bleed and fluid replacement. If the rubber sections of the lines have never been replaced this should be done too; our host sells them and they are relatively cheap (front; A-355-632-01 at $14.30 ea.; rear A-355-631-01 at $12.30 ea.). If the MC is original it may just be a good idea to replace it (C-355-012-02 at $109.00) when you open up the system. Remember the Motive pressure bleeder (PEL-0100 at $42.95). Cheers, Jim

It sounds like a master cylinder leak to me. On a '76 is it down below. Pain in the hiney to replace. Well, actually, it is not that bad - just getting the flexible lines from the reservoir back into the top of the master cylinder tried my patience.

Look in your footwell, too (under the driver's floorboard). If brake fluid has leaked into this area, you'll need to consider replacing the bushings in the pedal assembly. It's not imperative, but something to think about.
