Wayne's book question?
 

OK, I know that I should have picked up Wayne's new book by now, and tommorow I will, but can someone look this up for me? Or anyone just know the answer?

Here is the question: I am about to put the P/Cs back on my SC motor, w/ the new cylinder base gaskets, can I, or should I, put some sealant on the base gaskets? I was thinking of a very thin coat of hylomar-type flange dressing, (an RTV-type product, but almost a thin grease that stays pliable indefinitely). It does not specifically recommend this in the Bentley manual, but any compelling reason not to? I am trying to build the world's most oil-tight 911 motor. ;) Does Wayne's new book address this?

I just went thru the cylinder instal steps in Waynes book and there is no referance of anything being aplied to the copper base gaskets. The only mention other then not to forgeting to use them is that you might need to add an extra one to obtain the correct deck height. Hope this helps.

Sure, why not? Although the copper rings are designed to crush and seal, I see no reason to not smear a thin layer of sealant on both sides of the ring just to be sure.

First of all, you should get the book before you go any further. I have met many people who have torn their recently assembled engines back down to the longblock because they missed some relatively obscure detail that they saw a picture of in the book. Just get the book and know that you're doing it right.

That said, Simon, your statement is incorrect. On page 152, I have an entire subsection entitled "Cylinder to Case Gasket Sealant". This is where I recommend the 574 sealant be applied right before the camshaft housings are installed. The reason why it's not detailed in the cylinder install steps is because you need to install those dry so you can make the deck height measurements.

Get the book - it's a bit of a waste of time to answer questions that are already clearly documented in there...
