Megasquirt - VW COP experience?

I'm in the middle of converting my 930 over to Megasquirt ignition, and am trying to decide which direction to go on the COP units. It seems like the Toyota coils are the most popular by postings on MS conversion in the forums, but the VAG coils are about half the cost of the Toyota coils. Anyone have any experience with the VAG coils as far as fit in the engine and performance? Is there a reason the Toyota coils are more popular?

I'm still on a steep learning curve with Microsquirt (MS2 kit), and trying to sort it all out. I'm digging the hole deeper in designing a knock sensor board to work with MS2. I've done a lot of digging through postings in the forums, and a lot of great info out there. But still a lot of questions and things I need to sort out for this to be successful. Appreciate any suggestions on this -

The VAG coils don’t have the proper resistance, at least not the newer style coils. Look up the COP section in the mega squirt manual, it will provide the correct VAG PN if you want to go the VAG route. The older style COP works but aren’t the greatest fit and don’t look the sexiest

I'm using VAG coils, used them for years. Not with MS but another EFI system.

I haven't been to the wrecking yard lately, but I imagine they'd be flooded with Toyota coil packs at a bargain.

Thanks for the feedback -

If I'm not mistaken (and please correct me if I'm wrong), the earlier VW coils are high impedance and can be driven directly from MS. Both the Toyota and later VW coils are low impedance and need drivers. I've modded my system to be able to drive the low impedance coils, so should be good with either coil.

Are the older VAG coils physically different than the new ones? I was thinking they were the same -

I'm on the fence about used coils. If and when (usually when!) there's a problem with the system, I can at least eliminate any problems with the coils - for the most part. But might go that route and get a couple coils to experiment with. Maybe both VW and Toyota to see how they fit in the motor -

The old (1.8t) VW/Audi coils are shorter than the newer (2.0) coils.

I ran the Densos directly off the MS3X without separate ignitors.

I ran early Audi coils directly off the MS3X and had trouble when they started to die and the impedance went up and cooked some of the coil drivers. Ended up costing me a new daughter board and a new set of coils. That's when I switched to Denso and had zero trouble after that.

We have run the 1.8T coils in quite a few twin plugged motors using aftermarket ECU. We don't/have not used Megasquirt so can't speak to the compatibility with that system...
