Battery cable installation
Hi all,
I had introduced my car a year or so ago, but didn’t say too much about the car or myself. I began my career as an aircraft mechanic. The last 15 years I have been employed as an airline pilot, now cargo (thank goodness). I have mechanical and sheet metal experience, but not so much with welding. Lots of riveting but it doesn’t really help me here. This was one of the cheapest “drivable” cars I could find a couple years ago. It is a 1984, with no history, and it is a big mystery to me. I know it has had the front floor replaced at some point, because I get to fix it. I bought the car from an east coast state, so I figured it may have some rust. I paid quite a bit to have a PPI tell me how much work the car needs. A well known business that will remain anonymous performed the inspection, but once I received the car on the truck I immediately noticed a lot that was not mentioned. My PPI indicated it was a car with “good bones”, but had a cross threaded spark plug (how?). I immediately found lots of rust in all the normal places and realized the spark plug was the least of my concerns. I’m still happy with the car, and have since learned to weld. The car now has a new suspension pan, and alot of rebuilt/repainted parts. It still has a very long way to go before I get it back on its wheels. I have used these forums for so much and am extremely grateful for all the info. Currently, I am looking for info on the routing of the battery cable through the forward bulkhead. It looks like during the body work completed in the past, the hole was punched out with an awl…or maybe shot. I have looked at the forums for info but can’t find it. I need to know the hole size for the cable, and which grommet protects and seals it. If anyone has any pics of an original installation I would really appreciate it! Still so far to go! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
