best coil on plug selection

I am doing a coil on plug ignition on my 3.0 SC. I currently have tried a Bosch 986 221 024. which is used on a bunch of cars. It stands too tall over the valve cover. What are some other options that will be a closer length to an actual beru plug so I can make a nice mount/holddown to the valve cover?

I'm interested too. Don't these Bosch COPs come in a long and short version? Also relevant is the compatibility with the ECU you're using.

Most people use one of the Denso smart coils for Toyotas. 90919-02234 or 90919-02239.

If you want the height to match perfectly, you might need a different coil, like the 90919-02243. Here's a chart.

That chart is super helpful!

What is the perfect height?
And do all Denso COPs work with Megasquirt? The Bosch ones have different resistance and my notes state only pre 2001 Rev E & B should be used.

Any other suggestions are welcome too. I was looking at Beru ZSE043 before this thread was posted.

I don't know if there's a perfect height. Since the coils normally fit 4 valve pent roof chambers, they go straight in and sit straight up. Air cooled 911's have plugs that go in at an angle, so they don't really sit straight in at the valve cover. But the 02240 or 02243 are going to be your best bet. If you have access to a lathe and a dremel, you can trim down the circular part near the rubber grommet and remove the hold down boss, then maybe run a trimmed up stock grommet. FWIW, YMMV

If anyone is keen for a set of Denso COPs, the set in my car will be for sale shortly. I'm changing to a 'dumb coil' with my new EFI setup.

I have brand new connectors to go with the low-mileage COPs.

Which did you run Chris? I just got two 02229 COPs to check their fitment. I suppose they require 16mm spark plugs and won't fit my current BP6 plugs?
Did I read somewhere that the wiring on the Toyota COPs is different too? Something along the lines of they only need one of the two ground wires?

02239 I think. I can check when I get home.
I did have them wired with only three wires. 12v, ground, and the logic-level input

This is phenomenal information. Thank you everyone for contributing. So I got a 9091902244 Denso smart coil for Toyota to try out. The fit is much closer. Do I need different plugs since it doesn't snap on and is a spring? It still stands farther out but I think that may be that fact I'm not getting it on the plug. I also see that recommendation is 2240 or 2243. Is that different than my 2244? Reason i ask is that the listing for my 2244 says it also fits 2243. What's the difference?
Also the resistance question. i am going to run a Haltech 25000 system. They say don't worry about that. Which made me worry.
How are you holding the coil down or are you getting a positive lock fit with your plugs?

Chris, I'll buy your setup if you are selling it.

Regards,
Adam

What are those valve covers, and why is it necessary to explicitly bolt the coils in?

Those are the Tarett valve covers and they are fantastic!

One should always use the RSR-style plug retainers on the lower plugs just because gravity is not a friend in that situation. I use them on the top plugs as a precaution. It's a race engine and one does things to assure parts stay where they need to be even if it may be not be necessary.

Which weaponX coils are you using? Also, what outputs are you using to drive all 12 coils?

I bought all of the CoP stuff from Andrew at Rasant. The ignitors are the IMST31X units two per side.

I would order through Andrew as he gets the right version of the coils…but I think they are the WeaponX INDUCTIVE - Level 2 Direct Fire Super Coil.

"The ignitors are the IMST31X units two per side" Beautiful engine!
Do you use an ECU and crank trigger to fire the Igniters/CoPs? I always thought or wished there was a way to fire the CoPs without an ECU. Would be a nice way to step into the project without the expense and engineering of going full on ECU/Sensors/Programming...... Stock ignition doesnt need an ECU to fire the plugs.

Thanks!

Yes. I use a MoTec M130 ECU with crank and cam sensors. This setup allows sequential injection and plug firing. It also allows knock sensing on a per cylinder basis.
