1971 911T carbureted location of the fuel filter?
I have a 71 911T. I suspect I have a clogged fuel filter, but can't find its location. All the pictures/posts I read say it is located in the left area of the engine compartment. I believe it is a clear plastic inline filter in the early carburated engines. Any help would be great. Thanks, Jeremy

The SWB cars had a screen in the fuel tank and screens that fit inside the banjo fittings on the carbs, no other inline filters were used.

I have a 71’ as well. There is a screen in the tank outlet, easily checked, but this is for mostly larger debris. Fuel pump location can be near tank or near rear control arm, mine is near rear arm. Fuel line goes into engine compartment in far left corner (when viewed from rear of car), for mine there is a silver canister that is the fuel filter mounted on the left bulkhead. From there the carbs are feed. Stock would have a return line to tank. Would not trust the clear plastic type in this application.

what is the best way to drain a completely full gas tank. I was thinking of draining from the fill hole initially and getting the rest out via the fuel level sensor plug on top the the gas tank so I can inspect the tank. If there isn't any signs of rust in the tank, is draining enough or should I consider putting in an inline filter? I appreciat any suggestions. Thanks, Jeremy |

On my dismantled ‘71 there is a fuel filter just before the split to each Weber, but I cannot confirm the this was the original location. My fuel pump is located in the undercarriage engine support “beam” next to where you would weld a sway bar mount. It is protected by a cupped plate welded to the beam. Mine was full of gravel encasing the fuel pump. What a bad design if this was factory installed.
I note that for Weber carbs at least, Wayne Dempsey recommends in his How To Rebuild And Modify Porsche 911 Engines, that you install four (4) fuel filters, “one filter back by the pump, one in the usual spot in the engine compartment, and two tiny filters directly in front of the fuel inlet to each carbonator.” Cheers, Johan

Placing Fuel filters in the engine compartment can lead to fire , if the tube or filter fails.
Much safer to place it next to the fuel pump underneath the car. It is more difficult to replace and inspect, but much safer. |
