915 Question

I have a new to me 1980 SC. It's a very nice 44k mile car. The transmission shifts well up and down all gears except when downshifting from 5th to 4th. It grinds horribly trying to enter 4th from 5th making the shift impossible. It will shift from 5th to 3rd smoothly. I have tried double clutching and trying to match engine/transmission speed to no avail. I have read about bushings in the shift lever and the joint where the shift rod meets the transmission as well as adjusting the shift lever. The shift lever feels tight without slop. I'm wondering if this downshifting issue could be an adjustment issue while all the other shifting is smooth or something much worse? I was hoping to get some feedback on this issue before attempting an adjustment. Thanks in advance for any thoughts/suggestions.
