Painting over rubberized coating help
Hello ladies and gentlemen,
I'm in the process of painting some things and have run into a bit of a sticky situation... It seems that every paint I use over the rubberized coating on the gas tank and inside the trunk leaves it sticky and simply won't dry. I've tries several types of aerosol paint (lacquer, enamel, polyurethane...) and no luck; a sticky mess even after 72 hours. I haven't tried 2k paint yet but suspect that will yield the same results. I don't want to strip the coating off the tank- just repaint it because it's fugly. Water-based primer and then the topcoat? So I'm looking for any advice from anyone who has found a solution.

After coating my new tank with Wurth undercoating spray, I was able to paint the coating with a Rustoleum or Krylon rattle can - can't remember the color name. Came out not bad considering I'm a terrible painter. Is the coating you used able to be painted? Maybe it's too cold for the paint to dry properly?

Quote:
some ingredients kind of "reactivate" the rubber and it gets soft, thus coating not drying

For sure the solvents in the aerosol spray paint are the issue. The problem is that all spray paints contain acetone and xylene (not to mention a billion other solvents) that attack the rubber.
I've tried Rustoleum, VHT and Wurth ruberized undercoating and all of them leave a sticky mess. I can get acrylic spray paint and try that as a base coat... I suppose that's the next step.
