Oil Sump Stud - ‘73 911E

Had a stud pull free while reinstalling the sump cover ‘73 911E. My torque wrench was set at 8ft/lbs, so I was surprised when it kept spinning. I did notice some silver in the case-side threads that maybe old helicoil?

I also have 1 to 2 other studs that may be spinning.

Some other posts made it sound like these studs spinning is somewhat common and to just reinstall/replace and add red locktite. Others suggest tapping and using a new m6x1.00 helicoil.

Thanks for any help!

The magnesium cases are indeed soft. Personally, I would use a helicoil. The red loctite alone may, work but I like to have threads when using threadlocker. I might also go with blue loctite after the helicoil, just in case I ever had to remove the studs. Red is very strong.

A torque spec like that assumes a dry fastener. If its oiled it would affect the torque spec by 30-40% (according to 30 seconds of googling) and that would be enough to pull from a mag case.

Timesert. Tighten by hand, with discretion.

Timesert look like a great option, thanks John!

Interesting point too about the dry/lubed torque too. 8ft./lbs to 10 or 11ft./lbs doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is a mag case.

Thanks all!
