Porsche Crest Cooling Fan Paint Removal

Hello,

I'm not sure this is the correct forum but it's the one that made the most sense. The previous owner of my '72 waiting the cooling fan yellow. I would like to remove that paint and restore it to its original condition. What is the best way to go about doing this? My first thought is to have it media blasted?

Thanks for all the help!

- Robbie

Lost small part of a fin of the fan when sandblasted, but mounted it anyway.....

Is the fan powder coated or just sprayed? If it’s sprayed some good paint stripper or methylene chloride will take it off. If it’s powder coated then I’d have it glass bead blasted. I had 4 wheels done for $100 and the surface was beautiful and perfect for paint or cerakote…. Sandblasting night be too aggressive…

Bare or Cerakote. Powder coat will chip off over time and look like crap, leaving flakes everywhere. I had mine powder coated by Al Reed and it still started chipping in about 18 months.

Contact Shaun@Tru6 if it's powder coat. He knows a chemical that will remove powder coat. I went with cerakote done by a local gun shop.

Read this thread to see PC stripping and to see my fan and housing. Shaun does great work. Various other similar threads abound:

Powder coat removal?

Bead blasting and jasco paint stripper won’t remove powder coating at an effective rate. You need super stripper, thermo stripper or something similiar and it’s $300 a bucket plus shipping and some of the strippers aren’t available for private individuals to purchase. Decent paint removers have been removed from the market because idiots used these products without having a clue and ended up dead. Mother goes on a crusade and ruins it for everyone.

Methylene chloride. You can buy it from lab alley on the Internet. Highly effective and highly toxic.

Or just send it to Shaun. He would remove the coating. In my case he also drilled out, removed, prepped and re-plated the center hub of the fan and re-plated some other related pieces like the other half of the pulley, cup, nut, fan strap, strap bolt, etc. They are back to that stock greenish amber zinc plating. He also noticed a crack in my fan housing and fixed that, better than new, using an epoxy that people like you and I cannot get. And then he cerakoted the fan and housing.

This is what I recommend. For a variety of reasons. Leaving the fan nude will result in an ugly, mottled grey appearance once the magnesium oxidizes. Coating them with paint or powder coat is also temporary and will not last. Re-plating the zinc parts and cerakoting the magnesium parts will create a very handsome and lasting effect.

I have removed a lot of powder coat with my can of jasco but it’s about 10 years old and I’ve heard the new stuff isn’t very good.

I had to go back and look. Mine cost $340 using a local gun shop that did cerakote and a metal coating place in Bryan Ohio that did yellow chromate.
For anyone wanting to see Shaun's work, he has a lot of pics in my thread.
