3.6 conversion engine console (engine too low?)
Been hunting around and cannot find a good answer. My 3.6 (964) has been in my 75 since I bought it. The car has no gasket between the engine tin and the body, so the gap is easy to see. It has a 3.2 console and rear engine mount. What is weird is that there is a large stack of washers (+1.5") between the engine mount and the motor mounts in the body. These effectively lower the back of the engine. I wanted to make a proper spacer to replace the ghetto washers at first. If they are removed and you lift eh engine up the tins hit the body well before the mounts make contact, and the engine is tilted higher at the back, lower at the front substantially.
In my research it seems no one else needs these spacers under their motor mounts. The really weird thing is that the bottom blade of my engine (where we all jack the back of the car up from) is pretty close level to the ground, the gap between the tins and the body up the sides of the engine is actually slightly smaller in the back than in front (meaning the rear of the engine is higher than level), the transmission's shift linkage lines up in the hole in the body perfectly, etc. So it seems to be in the right spot. Is anyone running spacers under their rear motor mounts to make the engine "level"? If so how big are they? Am I suppose to need these spacers? |
I have two cars with 3.6 liters engines in them. With the OEM rubber mounts I have 16mm spacer. This give the top of the engine clearance as to not hit the rear deck.

I have seen a few where the rear shelf is modified for more clearance |
I have washers too and will take a picture when I get my car back. Also a 964 in a 1975.

So I should jack the engine up as high as I can without having the top of the engine hitting the body (the top of the intake manifold)? I would think, as some point, the engine console would not line up with the motor mount bolts?
Salazar, look forward to the pictures. |
Suggest looking @ the engine cross member Patrick Motorsports has for 3.6 conversions.

Ted, I tried looking and can only find 914 conversion consoles.
Another weird thing is I checked my Rothsport GT3 exhaust system. The top of the tips are dead level, as are my door sills. This tells me the engine is level. Very strange. |

James….perfect and thank you. That’s about what my washers look like. So I guess its a matter or making a single spacer to replace my washers!

Snap me a picture. I have huge gaps everywhere be Use my car is missing the rubber gasket between the tins and the body.
