Mounting 5.25" speakers to doors (not door card)
I just purchased new door panels and would prefer not to mount the speakers to them (as from the factory). Can someone tell em if 5.25" speakers will mount directly to the door or are they too small for the hole? And, if they are too small, is there a recommended adapter?
(I've seen the speaker spacers other forum members have made/used to install larger speakers in the doors but I'm thinking I should not need spacers). Am I wrong? Lastly, does anyone know the maximum depth a speaker can be as to not interfere with the window? Thanks |

I'm mounting 5.25" in my SC. I made a small adapter ring. Speakers will sit behind the door panel

I mounted 6.5” speakers directly to the door. Worked great.

6 1/2 " Infinity Reference speaks fit and work perfectly.
Well priced too https://www.crutchfield.com/S-iKCiRArHU7G/p_108R6532EM/Infinity-Reference-REF-6532ex.html?XVINQ=GLX&awkw=649818887901&awat=pla&awnw=g&awcr=335498417476&awdv=c&awug=9031028&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpJfh1avf9QIVUBZMCh0ffgE6EAQYASAB EgIiT_D_BwE ![]()

What grilles are you using? I bought (and still have) a pair of the Infinity Kappa 63XF speakers b/c I was going to do exactly what you did. However, I've not found any grilles that are plain enough for my liking. That's why I'm now leaning toward using 5.25" speakers in order to use the stock grilles. |

OK. So, now I am even more intrigued.
Aren't those grills sized/designed for 5.25" speakers? Or, am I mistaken? |

As you can see in the previous pic, the 6 1/2 speakers sit flush within the factory speaker openings (even the tweeters are set back a bit). With these speakers, they sit perfectly without any modification to either the speaker or door frame.
I also added a little sound deadening material that helps the low end a bit. Despite the factory grills not measuring 6 1/2, neither does the actual surface area of the speaker. I had no issues reinstalling the door panels. Great sounds from these speakers and a factory look. You should test fit your pair and see how well that fit. Nothing to loose

I'm pretty sure I installed these:
Kicker DSC6504 DS Series Coaxial Car Speakers, 6.5-in Needed to drill one extra hole in the door. Sound great, original speaker grills. The car has the decent original blau cd3001 amps, so it sounds surprisingly good for the era. I may have added a little foam to one area to ensure that the door card or something else wouldn't touch the speaker outer surround (the foam that links the chasis of the speaker to the cone), wasn't necessary and skipped it on the other side. Phil 81SC Edit, there were some wires in one part of the door that I pushed aside, they are a little hidden, be careful not shave off the insulation while drilling the hole. Thank you Stevie and Phil!
I had not considered the fact that the surface of the 6.5" speaker is likely smaller. And, possibly smaller enough that the original grilles would work without impacting the sound. It's a great idea and makes total sense. This is by far my preferred route not just b/c I already have 6.5" speakers but b/c I was not looking forward to figuring out how to create an adaptor to mount 5.25" speakers since I've already overthought this enough. |

On mine I had to slightly enlarge the door card to make the 6.5 driver fit.
The 5.25 was too small. As a tip when you mount the speaker, if the grill allows to be snapped on the speaker, secure the speaker through the door card and directly into the steel door frame. It will sound much better than being attached to the flimsy door card. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk |
