77 911 Flag Mirror Removal

So I'm in the process of upgrading to Vitalonis on my mid year 77 and ran into an odd issue. First of all, looks like I have two types of mirror bases on this car (not sure if normal).

The driver's side one is like most SCs I've seen and comes off as expected when I loosen the 4mm Alen bolt.

The passenger side mirror bolt is the issue I'm having - it is free spinning in the mirror base. The base is loose but will not come away from the door.

Next step I can see is remove the door card and try to access from behind but not sure if there will be enough room to see the other end of the bolt. Any recommendations?

Try putting a plastic pry bar (trim tool) between the door and the mirror base and put some pressure on the base while turning the bolt. Or a metal pry bar wrapped with tape.

Thanks, that worked. I would up having to take the bolt all the way out and a very different looking backing plate fell into the door. I have a feeling PO found a "custom" way to mount the mirror base.

Appreciate the help!
