1970 e not starting/ mfi rebuild?
Hi guys, in need of some much needed advise/knowledge. My 1970 911e has been very reliable until recently. About 5 months ago was the first issue… I tried starting and it would only crank, checked for spark nothing, after hours of trouble shooting I found the problem which was corrosion on the contact for the upper noise suppressor filter black wire from the generator. Cleaned the contact and fired right up. Drove it on a trip with lots of stop and starts and it was perfect. Now after storing it for the winter I wanted to drive and the it just cranks…. Trouble shot and these are the results… I have intermittent spark when I test from the coil wire to grnd while manually opening and closing the points. Sometimes it sparks consistent while operating the points manually and other times nothing. I wiggle the harness and then it sparks, it happens again I go to the area that I wiggled to try and pin point and nothing. It seems very intermittent like the cd box which is a perma tune that is at least 12 years old but never any issues before. Any one understand why the last time that fixed the issue it was the contact on the noise filter related to the alternator?
Tried my spare points and coil made no difference. Thank you, Chris Last edited by fricker; 04-18-2022 at 08:33 PM.. |

Check the multi pin plug that connects the engine loom to the relay panel for poor connection or corrosion

Well it turned out to be a bad day☹️ I finally did something to get the spark to be reliable so I decided to try and start the car. First attempt I got a couple kicks, then a couple of attempts nothing. Final attempt I got it barely running with me holding down the throttle, didn’t pickup rpm was hanging on probably 2-300 rpm, then I heard a backfire in the intake so I shut it off asap. Inspected and found two of my plastic air intake horns melted away badly. So after inspection I found that the engine was barely running due to the cold start fuel. I pulled one of the injector lines and put a bottle to collect the fuel while cracking over for a couple secs and less than a 1/4 of a teaspoon! Fuel flow out of the filter was fine. It looks like the MFI is toast after being stored for the winter in a non insulated garage! Not sure pacific fuel injection is still around? But I’m sure it’s like 2k for a rebuild which is out of budget and to add to that the two intake horns which are obsolete and no after market parts.
