Found this battery..

http://www.batterymart.com/battery.mv?p=ODY-PC925MJT

I bought one for my saab because I needed to relocate the stock battery due to custom downpipe. It's only 26 lbs, cheaper than my optima and it fits in the stock battery location of the porsche. Would have bought one for the porsche a while ago if I knew of it then. It can be installed on it's side as well.
Just a heads up, that's all.
Oh yea, it has no problem cranking over the saab.

I'd say it's fine if 470 CCA's does it for you. The Optima, as you point out, is heavier (~35 lbs.) and costs about $20-$25 more, but it also provides 800 CCA's. In some cases, this might mean longer battery life, better cold starting and more battery reserve. In other cases, the differences could be negligible.

Just picked up an Optima Red-Top for $105 at a local auto parts store. Prices seem to be coming down.

Optima in a '68? Designed for a single battery? Here's a thread you may enjoy. There is a smaller optima, designed to fit a 'vette..

NEO/Baker Performance makes a 24 lb battery with 500CCA. I don't think it costs more than $100. I think this would be a good alternative (Gel filled no leaks). does anyone have any experience?

Get the one I noted above. It's the same battery as a stinger, but with a different name. Hawker makes them, and then sells them to other co's.
I had to mount my optima in my 72 in a differnet place then the stock location. This battery above will slide right in. Hell, if it can start my boat of a saab with out a prob, it will start a 68. Oh yea, it's only 24 lbs, not 26. That little optima looks pretty cool as well
