Got This Installed Today
Got this installed today. I didn't realize that the navigation chip is sold separately by region, though. I'll put that order in tomorrow and I should be all set!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1649640732.jpg

That looks AWESOME! What are the spec's for it? I've always looked for something that looks "period correct" but still has some bells and whistles and this does all that.

Hint you can find it hundreds less elsewhere. Just Google it. There's some PP threads on this, and mixed reviews, especially the lack of any 'tech support' from the dealerships. Nice looking unit regardless. |
This one of the first things I did after purchasing my SC. The PO had installed one of those plasticky, early 2000s looking kenwood head units, which not only didn't work but looked ugly to boot.
The period correct look of the PCCM paired with the apple car play/google maps (albeit a small screen) is what sold me. There's no good place in our cars to put a phone while using google maps! What's the issue with tech support? Install problems? Or do we know of common problems with these head units? |

Damn.......$1500 for this unit from our host! Far more than I was wanting to spend.
I'll just go with the sound of the engine for now until I find something more affordable. |
Wow looks great! A stereo upgrade that doesn't look out of place on a classic car is hard to find. The fact that it's OEM just makes it cooler!

Continental VDO has a great option. Looks very period correct and Bluetooth works great for streaming tunes. I am able to have reasonable hands free phone calls as well. $200, easy install.

I can't figure out why the corners of the radio are so square and the opening in the dash is radiused or rounded. Same trouble on the Bremen except the Bremen also has a larger gap top and bottom.
Period radios fit so nicely in the opening. I know it's less obvious in-person, but $1500 for a factory radio designed for THIS car and I'd expect better fitment. |
This is the one. The other one may look cool, but who can see the nav map without having it a foot from your face.

while the Porsche unit looks great..at 1100 less the Bremen is tempting

The added benefit is -20lbs or more in radio, speakers, wires, antenna, etc. I do love the retro look of the Porsche unit and while $1500 is a lot compared to a 1996 Alpine CD player it’s not much in the Porsche or audio world. |

pstallo - unit look great, and blends in really well. I would have installed this, but my 88 has a lot of other needs in front of the line right now. After I finish the suspension, clutch, windshield, and some paint work, will tackle this with the same unit when I do the interior updates. For me, this is the right unit, but $200 all in for the Continental unit meets my needs for now.
To be clear, I covet your stereo, some day. |
I looked into the GPS unit, and decided that the Blaupunkt Bremen was a better option for me.
The maps have to be updated constantly, and nothing beats a cell phone for constant automatic updates. I have the phone mount that is a ring around my clock. It works fine for my iPhone, and I can remove the magnetic part, and low and behold, a ball mount that my Garmin GPS will mount right onto. So I have a choice, phone or real GPS. A GPS will work even in remote areas where there is no cell signal. You head unit does look nice however. |
Radio? Top off, back road, revs up who listens to a radio?
