911SC front inner wheel bearing race location
Didn't drive my SC much at all over the past couple years, and the other day when I did drive her the front brakes told me it was time to work on things. So, as a result of cleaning and attempting to kit out the calipers and hoses, I delved into a wheel bearing project. Got the wheel bearing seal out, locally I can only source all rubber type National 1012N seals that aren't metal types like the Kraco or Elring seals, I guess I'll roll with them unless someone speaks up with a "don't do that!".....so anyways, I'm looking at the outer race for the inner bearing as it has existed in my hub for who knows how long. At first glance it looks like the race isn't seated by about 1/8"? However, gently feeling the groove at the points where a drift would be used to knock the races out, seems perhaps the race is "home" and the casting is throwing me off? What you guys think?
Thanks! SC ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

If nothing else, hopefully this thread will live on in the "searchable and valuable archives of the forum" where I've already spent my afternoon!

It is "home", or seated. That is a machined ledge, register. Same observation caught me off guard two years ago.

When using a race driver, you'll know it is fully seated by how it sound when you hit it. It's a nice solid sound when full seated.
Those parts look nice and clean. |

This caught my eye recently, as well. I could tell by the sound that the race was home, but I also used a mirror look closer/behind the race and found that it was home.

If you are replacing bearings use the races that came with them. That race looks a little blue. I would go ahead and re use if you are just packing the bearings. Next time you may think about new bearings.

Yes, since I already had the front calipers removed, it was a good time to remove the hubs and inspect. The races and the bearings looked fine so it was a clean, repack and replace situation this time. The "blue" you may have noticed on the races was probably just a wipe of the old grease after cleaning them up and before final assembly just so they wouldn't flash rust on me. The old grease was an aqua blue green stuff. The new tub of grease I used was the O'Reilly's MasterPro high temperature wheel bearing grease, it's red, and after much searching online for the manufacturer I came to realize it appears through an MSDS it is a Citgo product. Good enough for me. I'm not crazy about the National 1012N bearing seal I sourced locally, but it did fit and will probably function just fine.
