Rear torsion bar

Good morning all. I am trying to re-install my rear torsion bars on my 69E. The left bar goes in about 1/2 inch and then stops. To get it to go further I have to drive it hard with a drift and hammer. The right side goes in just fine. If I install the right side and push it further through it jams. I looked at the splines with my horoscope and can’t see any problem. I don’t want to damage anything. Thanks

Spend some time dressing the splines by hand with a three-sided file.

Hammering will just make it harder to remove when you decide to upgrade.

Keep filing until the bar slides easily in/out.

Also wet a rag with some brake cleaner and use a broomstick to clean the gunk off the inner splines. You should be able to pass the broomstick right through to the other side when all the 53 year-old gunk is cleaned out.

When I did mine there was pieces of broken bushing jamming the threads when I tried to reinstall the bar. Banged my head against that for a while...

Rear torsion bar

I have tried sliding the right bar into the left side, same result. The bar goes in a little then binds hard. I think there must something going on with the splines in the tube.

I had to dress the splines on the torsion bar after removing it to get it to slide back in. It took all of 5 minutes and was incredibly simple. I also had to dress the splines to fit the new spring plates, again, 5 mins and perfect fit.

Doesn't take much to jam them. Micro crap from 50 yrs ago.
As posted above - clean inner and outer splines and dress with fine file any burrs - feel the edges. A small change will fix all.

Rear torsion bars

I have a feeling the problem may be the splines in the torsion bar tube. Any thoughts if that is where the problem is, what can I do about it. Thanks, Kevin

I don’t think there’s anything you can do with respect to the splines in the torsion tube without cutting it out (?) so you’re only recourse is to try and make the torsion bar fit by working it.

This of course is predicated on the idea that there’s nothing in the tube that’s humming up the works. And there shouldn’t be as the bars for once before.

I’d be weary of trying to clean it out for fear of mucking it up. I suppose a really long wire brush or something akin would remove the grease but you’ll have to put it back anyways.

Also, if you mess up the torsion bars, new ones can be had, not so with the tube.
