Transmission problem
Hello, I’m new to the forum, and new to the 911 hobby. I was driving my recently purchased ‘77 911S home from work last night, on the freeway, doing about 75 in 5th gear, I felt a slight vibration, and then the engine rev’d - like it popped out of gear, it didn’t, it was still in the 5th gear gate. I selected every other forward gear, and had no engagement. No weird noises, or vibration, it will not move forward, or reverse. Any advice on what may have happened?
Thank you -Jim |
Clutch?

Broken cv joint? Axle popped loose?

Remove the screws securing the inspection cover on the rear floor between the seats.
See if you notice any amiss - like a disconnected coupler? |

Outers usually just sit there. Inners can do some damage. Use new bolts and schnorr washers. Check the length of the new bolts against the old ones, 45 or 50mm. 12 point heads are better than 6 point, they can be tightened more and don't tend to round out the internal hex.

It seems like a hell of a coincidence that both sides would push the last bolts out at the same time...
I'd get a set of new bolts and some Schnorr washers...You'll need them maybe 5mm longer to fit the pair of Schnorrs, and if you go to long they'll fowl on the gearbox. I got mine from Bolt Depot. I believe torque is 60 ft-lb. |
