Bringing the bling back to the 67

Hi All,
I have owned 67 911 (306344) for almost thirty years. The previous owner back in the 80’s blacked out all the chrome on the car. I was told this was a common thing back then to make the car appear newer. Over the last year I have decided to bring “the bling” back to the car by removing the black paint on the trim. So far I have disassembled the engine grill, removed the black paint and reassembled. I was successful removing the black paint from the chrome on all the light housing. I put some chrome Durant mirrors on, replaced the black horn grills with some chrome ones and had the rear bumperettes rechromed (200 bucks ouch!) Here is my dilemma. I want to re chrome all the window trim. I removed both rear pop out windows and lower trim pieces in the hope I could remove the paint and viola the chrome would appear. To my dismay whoever painted the trim must of sanded off the chrome down to the brass and then applied the paint. I brought the rear pop out windows / lower trim pieces and latches down to a somewhat local plating place to get a quote on re chroming these pieces. I was quoted $730 bucks to get this done. I told the proprietor that I would have to think about it and let the cost marinate. My plan was to have the rear pieces done (3-4 weeks) This would give me some time to pull the door window trim, door latches, and front headlight rings off the car and order the new weather stripping. I was going to drop the other pieces off when I picked up the first batch. Am I being myopic on the cost to get chrome done? Should I ship my pieces to be chromed out of California to a state with less stringent EPA regulations? What have others done concerning re chroming? I am planning on buying new front and rear window trim when I pop the windows out for a repaint. Car is currently black but I plan on painting it back to its original Slate grey (6601). I am thick skinned and might be living in the past so please educate me on plating. Sorry for the long winded post and thanks in advance for your replies.

are those parts definitely chrome on a 67? on my 70, I believe the pop out window trim and trim under the windows is all anodized.

as far as the window latches, my recollection is that I paid 150 to rechrome mine last year. hope that helps!

67 is chrome over brass. Thanks for the reply I was quoted 160 to rechrome my latches so definitely in the ballpark. My internet research says to ship my pieces to either Georgia or Arizona for plating. I have a buddy who heads to the Phoenix area once a month who I could possibly hit up to pony express my parts out. Anyone ever had chrome done in the Phoenix area ? My OCD has issues with shipping all these parts across country ( what could go wrong ? Lol) Thanks in advance for all reply’s

I had mine done by custom chrome plating in Ohio and the parts arrived back to me in perfect shape. they packaged everything individually, so if the shop is careful I wouldn’t be too concerned about the shipping itself. I would, however, document every individual part you include just so there’s no ambiguity later.

Awesome, thanks for the recommendation. Would you mind sharing pricing? The more I research the more I realize I had no clue to the cost of chrome

I am restoring a 1971 T coupe that likewise had the window frames painted black. We stripped the paint, sanded them some more with progressively finer sandpaper and polished them. They may be not as shiny as chrome but took about 8 to 10 hours of shop time and look more than presentable. Saved $ and have the pride of doing them ourselves.

Right, but, your frames are aluminum. As stated, his are chromed brass that that was sanded down to the brass prior to paint.

Man, I’d have a hard time painting over that paint job. Unless it’s much worse in other areas. Looks amazing from the pix. I do understand the desire tho get it back to the original color though. Especially slate grey. Good luck.

Bringing the bling back to the 67

Give these guys a try- a friend of mine used them for some of his Citroen parts and was very happy. Reasonably priced.

The paint looks better in the pictures than in person. Definitely a 10 footer in certain areas.I am planning on doing the chrome first and to continue driving it as I accumulate the necessary funds for a complete paint / rust repair job. I have seen a couple of older 911’s painted slate grey and man I love that period color. I know this sounds like the cart before the horse but bass ackwards seems to be my modus operandi on this car. I appreciate the chrome recommendation and am planning on calling them next week .

Phase 1 of “ Bringing the Bling Back” complete! I used a plater in North Hollywood called Astro Plating. Phase 2 ( door window trim pieces are dropped off and should be done in a few weeks. Astro seems to do good work at reasonable prices. So far so good for round 1. I will give a thorough review after phase 2 pick up. I have attached phase 1 receipt for price comparison and contact info. Anyone on this forum know the size of the press nuts that go under the wheel wells to secure the under quarter window trim piece down. Each piece has 5 brass unthreaded studs that are accessed / secured from underneath .
Thanks in Advance

I went with the forum recommendations and purchased the Porsche seals. Dish soap and leaving the seals in the sun to soften seams to be the trick for installation. Glad the seal installation was not a big PITA considering I had to install them twice. I forgot to install the metal tabs on the window trim that mount to the b pillar before initially installing the seals. Doh! Planning on ordering the Porsche wind wing seals for the door frame trim installation unless anyone has a better recommendation.
