1987 coupe metal click
So I have an '87 sunroof coupe. The car makes a rather audible metal-on-metal click when driving over bumps and sometimes at dethrottle. I've isolated the click to mostly come out of the somewhere behind the B-pillar on the passenger side. It feels sort of all around the upper right corner of the rear window and sometimes into the C-pillar. Tried holding the window - it persisted so it's not the window. I also removed the insulation pieces that cover the rear of the sunroof mechanism (motor and such) and tried holding everything I could find while riding (a friend was driving). Doesn't seem like it's any of those. This click is a bit too far down for it to be the sunroof rails too. Stuck my hand through the zipper to see if anything is loose and couldn't find anything at all. So my guess is that maybe a weld on the body failed and it creaks every time the body flexes over a bump? I guess I'd have to fully remove the headliner to see what's going on which I'm reluctant to do as it's a big job. Any ideas what it could be? Anything else to try?

this thread should help, your issue sounds similar to the clunking I heard when mine broke Cracked Rear Sway Bar Mount

Had the same issue on my 84 Carrera.
The sunroof when fully open rests on felt pads. The felt pads wear out over time which allows the sunroof to rattle on the tracks. The felt pads are located on the far back of the tracks. You need to remove the sunroof and replace the felt pads. Hope this helps! Last edited by Antomero; 05-02-2022 at 03:00 AM.. |

I was thinking that too. I did futz around under the car a lot and most likely I would've noticed it but it won't hurt to check again.

I did. Sadly I could only do it on the freeway and because of the cabin noise you can't hear much. I'll try to do it again in the city sometime although that would require for my buddy to drive the car.

cabin noise does not matter that could avoided listening for the sound-we can pick what does not belong.Let your buddy record and you drive;-)
