Question Shave My Kuhmo's????

Received this email from a salesam at the tire rack after i placed my order for Kuhmo V700's. Should i shave them or is he just trying to get me to spend more money?????

We have received your order for competition tires via our website. We highly recommend that these tires be shaved prior to use, especially if you plan to use them in dry conditions. These tires have a tendency to "chunk" out when driven hard in dry conditions at their full tread depth. Please let me know if you would like to have these tires shaved or receive them as is.
Your order will be on hold until I hear from you.
Thanks for choosing "The Tire Rack".

What he says is true. If you are going to race, have them shaved. The tires come 6/32nds as you can see on the TR site. They shave 2/32nds. So you will still have 2/3rds of the tire, but better performance. Tire people have always talked like that. (no 16ths)

I've heard they last just as long or longer when shaved.

The new Kumho ECSTA have a real problem with chunking and need to be shaved. The older V700s can benefit from shaving but I've run them successfully without. The ECSTA have a deeper tread to start with hence the need to shave, can't remember the measure off the top of my head.

My experience with Kumhos.....

I ran the Ecsta's on my 2200lb 911 w/o having them shaved.
They did not chunk and the tires wore evenly.
I have heard if your car is over 2500lb then you should have the Ecsta shaved as the chances are greater the heavier car will chunk the Ecsta.

Regarding the Victor racer I have heard it is not necessary to shave these. They have much less tread depth than the Ecsta. This is obvious when the tires are new side by side.

2 cents more....
I like my Victor racers much more than the Ecstas. The Ecstas would get greasy after 10 minutes of hard driving.
When the Ecsta rears wore out I removed the 3/4 worn fronts and made planters with them.

The Victor racers are good till the end of the 30 minute sessions.

Lastly I felt the Ecsta tires are narrow for their size.
The Victor racers seem to last longer on my car.

RS bodied car with 255/40/17 & 275/40/17 Victor racers.
