911 R FRONT lamps??

Anyone have a source for the front lamps (turn signal area- NOT the cibie "froggies") on a 911R?
They are two slightly curved flat style and two rectangular units with "stand up" sections
Thanks

There are hundreds of old threads on this topic. Search for rally lights.

He's not talking about the rally lights. He's talking about the turn signal lights down by where the horn grilles would normally be.

I wish I knew. It would have saved me a bunch of work fitting TS buckets to my fiberglass fenders. the best news is that the lenses fit more flush than my targa did from the factory.

I seem to recall that they were from some other model car. I don't remember which.

Porsche sourced the rear lamps from some trailer, so it would not be a surprise that they came off some obscure vehicle that we never heard of.
Light weight and compliance with laws were their goals, not looks- that's for sure

I have been trying for ages to identify/track these down - I think that the larger of the 2 (the amber turnsignals) are from a late 50's/early 60's Auto Union/DKW 1000.

Well,

I quized Gary Emory.....he's done a few real nice copies...and he doesn't remember what he used...only that it wasn't "really correct".

For the rears....my understanding was that it was NSU overlap....but I don't recall the mm diameter size, but they were Hella units.

911R front lights

The 911R used two small light units in the front fenders to take place of the standard 911 units. the amber one (turn signal) is from a Prinz 1000 (NSU) around the year 1967, it mounts into a hole from the outside of the fender, and is all plastic, with a rubber gasket between the light back and the fender.
The other one with the clear lens (parking light) is also made by Hella, I havent found out what type of vehicle it was used for yet, so if someone knows please tell us. I have a data sheet for this light unit and it's dated 1960. I've seen the parking lights at VW swap meets, but with an amber lens/or half clear/red lens. so maybe someone from the VW world might be able to help. one more, the low fuel warning light (red) thats just above the radio cutout on the dash may be from a Unimog 404 dash.

Cool red and white lamps

Ernie,

I think the red and white lamps you're speaking of are 63-67 VW
Type 3 (squareback, nochback, and type 3 Ghia) not Karmann Ghia. They are the side marker mounted on the front fenders between the wheel opening and the door. They are very similar, but not the same thing. Hope this helps.

All the best!

Ernie - thanks for that info - only the side marker to track down now!

For the benefit of those who may not know what an NSU Prinz is/was - it looked like a 1/3 scale Corvair & featured a twin-cylinder 4-stroke rear engine.

Andy,

Can you find a picture of the rear of this car and post a picture?? I believe the tail lights from this car are the ones used on the rear of the R...as I mentioned above.

I am not so certain that the REAR lamps from the Prinz are correct- they seem too large when i compare our R lights to the pictures of TT's we have seen. the fronts definitely R correct

911R front lamps

I've found the amber, and clear/red lens on the same type of light. mostly at VW swap meets. The part number on the box may be a clue, anyone have a Hella parts catalog...a total of five lights came in the box. Might have been marker or truck running lights???

Eric, I'm afraid that the 911R rear lamps did not come from the NSU Prinz - I originally thought that they were from the NSU TT/TTS model & tracked down a set of those lamps in Germany. I was very disappointed when they arrived, to find that, although they are of a similar size, they are not the same & are made by Bosch not Hella.

I have accumulated some of the correct Hella rear lamps & (as GeorgeK stated in an earlier thread *) they come in a variety of lens configurations - all red, all amber (both taking single filament bulbs), amber/white & amber/red taking 2 x single filament bulbs - all with chrome or plain rims.
