Marine applications
I know Porsche has been used to power many things, cars, trucks, blimps, aeroplanes but I've never heard of any marine applications. Being air cooled would be a draw back but not exclusive of the application. Any body know/heard of ocean going flat sixes?

I have never heard of a Porsche race boat or speed marine use of any sort. I have, however, theorized and pondered a Porsche-powered flat bottom ... the end result is that there is no substitute for cubic inches.
To turn the prop in the water requires a bucket of torque ... more than a Porsche flat-six could provide at low RPM. Marine applications are primarily torque applications, only when a boat is REALLY moving does horsepower become a factor. Now, if you were to use a 928 V-8 motor or the V-8 from the new Cayenne, you just might have yourself a winner. Or, if you could wrangle a 12-cylinder 917-30 Can-Am motor, then I believe you would be able to use a Porsche in a boat. However, I could be wrong. But, like I said, I've hypothesized, theorized, and pondered on this, as well as talked to numerous mariners in search of advice. It's a good idea nonetheless. |

I have seen a Corvair engine used in a boat...the neat thing was...starting it on the trailer and then having a coffee while it warmed up!!
It was attached to an IO unit. Bob

I was referring to V-drive, not I/O. I want to prove the naysayers wrong and build one anyone. Like Dick Jones said to Bob Morton in the bathroom at OCP, "Who cares if it works or not!!!"

I've heard the old VWs were watertight and could float... Maybe the old 911s are similar. Does that count?

These are some pics of the Scwimmwagen where you can see it in operation. Notice the propeller, which could be attached to the engine for "swimming". ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Porsche Marine Engine
This is a Type 729/1, 52 HP (DIN) at 3600 RPM, 1959 Porsche Marine Engine
![]() ![]() ![]() Most of the sheet metal was off of the engine when the photos were taken, the metal covering has a lot do do with air cooling when mounted in a boat. Ernie Wilberg, R-Gruppe #8 |
