'83 911SC w/ SSIs & M&K - Looking for a quieter muffler

Looking for feedback/experience on SC running SSIs with different mufflers. The M&K I have is too loud for a residential area. Would be great for the track. I want to keep the SSIs. What are your experience with tame mufflers attached to the SSIs? 2 in and 1 out. TIA.

I’m not a fan of super loud cars. I’ve got the Dansk Sport unit from our host. It sounds good, definitely louder than stock but part throttle and idle are tame enough for neighborhood duty.

I bought the wrong one and had to have it modified to fit the SC valence, but I understand there is one that’s designed for our later cars which fits out of the box. That’s be my recommendation.

thank you, Mike! I'll try to find a YouTube video. Ideally someone interested in swapping.

Mufflers

‘82 SC with SSI’s
M&K 2/2, Sounded great, but a bit too loud with drone around 2200 - 3000 rpm’s
Stock ‘74 2/1, Nice and quiet, sounds ok
M&K 2/1, acceptably loud in a good way, that’s what I run, but I kept the stock ‘74 2/1 for my anticipated move to a “quiet” neighborhood…

Have you tried this type of muffler/s? They fit and sounded well with SSI or headers.

I second the Dansk Sport Muffler, I have stock SC with SSI's, great sound, no drone.

I too have the Dansk Sport and SSI. I'll see if I can upload a vid in a little bit.

I just installed a new M&K 2 in 1 out street muffler on my 79 SC. The street version is much quieter then the sport. It sounds great and isn’t much louder then the factory setup. I would definitely recommend it

Thanks for all the feedback. Looking forward "seeing/hearing" Nditiz1's vid.

My wife won't ride in my car with the M&K. It is indeed f'n loud. Have to admit, I'm a track junky and don't mind it. In a parking garbage I can set off car alarms by blipping the throttle. A bit juvenile I admit. Something I did when I was younger... ;-)

Anyone ever find a back to back, head to head, dyno comparison of these two mufflers? There are a few threads kicking around the forum but they are short on actual results.

I want a quiet muffler that makes the most horsepower.....the sound level is easy to gauge. The Dansk sport 2 into 1 sounds to me like it's not very restrictive, but still seems to control the noise level.

On the other hand, the M&K sounds wicked and is 10 pounds lighter. This is exactly why everyone needs two cars

I love my Monty 2 in - 1 out (M21) on my '79 SC. I went from stock setup with a cat bypass to SSIs and the Monty. No drone at all. It's a little louder from outside the car, from the drivers seat it has nice tone to it without any increased volume. Very neighbour friendly, but still gives a growl when you get on it, so very happy. The only dyno shop in town closed so can't compare stock to this setup as I had hoped to do.

Keep your M&K

Been there...

I recommend you keep the M&K and buy the cheapest Dansk 2-1 muffler you can find (~ $400).

My 3.2L with SSI and M&K 2-2 is cool until I'm tired of it... ~25 minutes later I can swap in my Dansk 2-1 muffler for a sound that feels underwhelming after 3-4 months. Short stint with the M&K renews my need for loudenss...

Good luck,

Also, have you tried baffles or a cap on one of the pipes? They make a huge difference for very little money.

Jonny,
I've been looking for about a decade now for good data on all the common Mezger modification but it is very rare. When you consider how much gets spent on these engines it surprising we base most of our decisions on the unsubstantiated opinions of others.

As for Dansk Motorsport 2 into 1's, I've been running one for a few years now and can only offer this advice from my wife:

"You know those cars that wake you up in the middle of the night because they are so loud that you just wish the driver would crash and die so you can go back to sleep............your red car is that loud."

I know you're asking about mufflers connected to an SSI exhaust. My experience is with an 82 SC ROW with European Racing Headers 1 5/8" tubes with a Dansk 70mm pipe sport exhaust muffler, it sounded great.

I have a silencer. Still very loud. Trying to be a good neighbor. I've had lots of race cars and this set up, the dBs are up there with my race cars. Appreciate all the input.
