Engine Mounts

My car is creaking, groaning and banging. Something is not right. I replaced the shocks and the noise remains. Don't think it's the CV's and the sway bar bushings look new. So thinking the motor mounts. I did recently install the engine after a clutch replacement. Noise seems to be coming from right behind the front seats (trans mount bushings?)

Bought "Engine Motor Mount + Transmission Mount Set 4pcs Meyle HD Germany Porsche 911" Any thoughts?

Also, which way do the washers go on. Thinking facing down on the top and up on the bottom.

Thanks,

Chris

Have you checked your spring plate bushings?

No, there probably shot. Will replace when doing the lowering. Done it on a previous 911. PITA if I remember correctly. Would that cause the noises I am hearing? About the right location.

Chris,
I installed the WEVO engine mounts on my 89 and the concave washers are facing each other.
Another good upgrade for your car would be the Rennline stainless steel engine support bar, i had to weld my original one twice before i decided to go with the Rennline unit.
During my first engine drop i realized that Frankenstein must have repaired it the first time as when the bolts were removed the holes weren't even lined up, the previous guy must have forced it in there and it was tweaked big time !

Yea. I had to weld one end already. I keep an eye on it and it appears to be holding

cmcfaul - you 89 has an integrated tranny mount - not replaceable unless you go with Wevo inserts welded in...I have one on order right now.

I have some noise on bumps back right in that same area and suspect the spring plate bushings are just shot, and likely need the trailing arm bushings as well. Plan is in works, just need some time.

I had some of the same noises coming from the rear end, especially during cornering and shifting.
Replaced the engine and transmission mounts and that fixed it.On yours, could of course be something else, but that fix worked on my '88 Carrera.

You can also use Superpro bushings in a G50 transmission mount. That being said, I'm not a fan of the harder engine and transmission mounts in a street car.

One more thing while we're in the 87-89 conversation , you can replace the soft rubber bushing for your shift linkage with a harder pillow unit , i think it's made by JWest if i remember correctly, it helps to keep everything lined up when you shift, and yes the WEVO transmission mounts need to be welded in on the G50 cars.
The shift linkage bushing is accessible through the steel plate in the rear tunnel but the original rivets are a pain to drill out .
I did all that stuff on my 89 and it was a great improvement over stock !

I'd take a long hard look at your CV joints. If your new mounts are correctly installed I'd be looking elsewhere for the "....banging...". If it wasn't an issue before you took the engine out/back in, think through what you could have installed incorrectly. Did you have the flywheel out for resurfacing? If so did you install with new hardware and locktite?

FWIW, I just installed factory Cabrio / Club Sport engine mounts (higher durometer rubber) and WEVO black transmission mounts on my 1987 mildly wife unfriendly / "Club Sport" M491 build.

It feels like a good setup for a slightly more sports purpose feel.

I also have a spring centered clutch disk and a WEVO PSJ. There's definitely more vibration transmitted through the shifter with the new engine / trans mounts. I'll swap the stock shift coupler in for some A/B testing. While the coupler is accessible under the access plate from the cabin, the aft bolt is only accessible underneath the car.

I did the rears, no problems. The Transmission mounts dont seem to be replaceable. How is it done. The kit I bought has 4 rear mounts.

There is a lot of play in the bolt holes on the old mounts. Even in the pics the holes are enlarged.

Thanks

for the G50 cars - there are several sources for two part bushings for each seat. You would have to drill and pry out the old bushings and they sandwich in. Rennline has them. Up above, an alternative is sending to WEVO, they will remove, clean it up and weld in their inserts. The 915 engine/tranny mounts do not work on the 87-89 cars. I am installing the Rennline tranny mounts and WEVO engine mounts next weekend.

On an 87-89 you can cut out the bushings and replace them with bushings from Rennline, etc (that's what I did with my '87 trans carrier). The mount you have pictured above the trans carrier is the incorrect one - it was meant for a 915 transaxle, not G50.

This is the correct style:
