2.7CIS Engine, Runs, Drives, Smokes - Value ?
 

Have a running, driving, smoking 2.7 Engine with CIS in a 74 US Carrera. Smokes under power, case is dry, no visible oil leaks. There is no engine number on the pad, but motor was swapped out sometime in the 80’s I believe.

Any guidance on value greatly appreciated, car can be test driven to confirm its operational……what would be a fair ask for this?

Suggestion: Have compression and leak down numbers available for potential buyers.

Any history of rebuild/repairs on the motor to help with valuation?

These horizontal motors are famous for sitting and dripping oil from valve guides and rings into the exhaust and muffler. Smokes like a banshee until you can burn it off or swap exhaust.

Additionally, a bad CIS mixture adjustment can make them smoke.

Otherwise, core value is what these days, $3k?

Give or take depending on serial # and motor type number. For awhile the blank pad motors were sought after and a 911/83 might be worth a few more bucks

I did a cold motor compression test last night and came up with this:

CYL #1 – 128# (large exhaust valve leak)
CYL #2 – 152# (14% leak at 90 psi)
CYL #3 – 149# (22% leak at 90 psi)
CYL #4 – 150# (16% leak at 90 psi)
CYL #5 – 120# (large exhaust valve leak)
CYL #6 – 140# (30% leak at 90 psi)

I am going to change the oil, adjust the valves, and revisit the numbers on a warm engine, the short time I drove it home from unloading down the hill it ran very very rich and yes, the HE's are probably soaked in oil as well......but those 100% leaks out of exhaust on 2 cylinders are unlikely to get better

That is a core engine with that much leakage all around. I have seen CIS engine properly rebuilt and complete sold for crazy dollars to bat sheet buyers on BAT for more than $30K. But rebuilding a Porshe 911 engine properly by a shop is a $20K endeavor or more. $5K max is the core value for your engine. It used to be $5k for a good running engine when the SC was down to $10k for a car.

Yeah, I agree with yelcab1, somewhere between $5K to $7K.

With those leakdown numbers, I would consider this a core engine and worth $3K tops. If, after adjusting the valves etc, the warm leakdown numbers all improve considerably, 10% or less...then it will be worth $5K or more......
