915 Transmission problem

Transmission question. I have a 1980 Porsche 911SC with a 915 transmission. Recently I noticed a spin up whine when I shifted from first to second gear. On further investigation I found that after it was in second gear rolling along, if I pulled back on the shift handle, I could feel and hear a grinding sound. Once in second gear and shifting into other gears there are no other sounds.

Remove the 4 nut plate on the bottom and see if the guide fork that's attached to it is loose. Tends to make a whizz noise when shifting.

will you loose trans oil once that plate comes off??

It can't hurt to change it now anyway.
Drain it the normal way and also remove the plate and let it drip out for the night.
