Power Window Help :1988 911
Hi Gang,
Need some help. I have power windows in my 1988 911 and went to put the window down yesterday and it died. I can move the window up and down by hand and I can hear the motor working on the inside, but it seems it came off its trick or something. I am assuming I need to take off the side panel of the door, but do not know the first thing about where to start in the process. Anyone had this happen to them? Any pointers on starting to take off the side panel of the drivers door? Thanks in advance! Brandon

Brandon,
I just replaced my passenger window motor last week. It's a PITA but not impossible. Briefly: Remove black door edge cap...after screws are removed it lifts over the door-lock button. Remove 5mm screws attaching door handle, there are two at the top and two just above the door handle (look in the holes with a flashlight). Lift door release bar out of door handle with a flatblade screw driver. Take out about 8 philips screws around base of door panel and remove carpeted junk holder...don't forget the screw inside the door pocket. You'll also need to remove the one philips that secures the back of the door pocket lid to the door. Pull door panel away from door. You'll be unsnapping about 5 plastic clips...don't worry, they won't break and are completely reusable. Disconnect wiring for your power door switch (write down wire positions so that it goes back together right). Also disconnect wires at base of door (not sure what these do...they lead to a small black box attached beneath the door lever). Now, carefully pull away the plastic that covers the door. It will stick back on afterward...if not, use a shmear of 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive. There are about 4 5mm bolts that secure the regulator/motor assembly to the door frame. When you remove these, the assembly will come loose and is removable for repair or replacement of the motor. After reassembly, you'll need to adjust window travel with the 13mm height adjustment bolt, and the two 5mm angle adjusters. This is an oversimplification of the process. Have a look at the Bently Manual as a reference. It's not great, but any assistance will be appreciated. Mostly, you'll just have to dig in and use your best judgement. Note....if you have to remove your motor, you'll need size 25 Torx screwdriver / bit. Why in the world Porsche chose to use these is beyond me! And in the ubiquitous words of Bentley himself..."reassembly is the opposite of disassembly"....yeah, right! Good luck...you may have to replace the regulator to finally get it right. As I understand, they are nearly impossible to repair and align reliably.
