89 Carrera CV replacment

For the 89 g-50 Carrera. Can the inner CV joint be replaced or does the whole shaft have to be replaced?

Thanks

Chris

I just went through this and opted to replace the entire CV axle after taking into consideration both my time, and the mess. It actually took more time to get the car up on jack stands and back down than to carefully remove the CV axle and replace it.

There are a good number of threads that have some great info. For all of my hand wringing, this was one of the more straightforward repairs.

A couple of key points for me were:
- replace all of the CV bolts
- use a good impact wrench to remove the axle nut
- clean the inner CV joint before you start, including the bolt heads
- make sure you have a really good seat on your allen head bit, I just loosened all of them initially, just got them moving, and then backed them out one at a time
- you will have to remove the control arm and shock bolt to clear the axle
- hand tighten the axle bolt, then all of the CV bolts, I then tightened them all firmly and pre-torqed the axle nut to ensure the axle was properly seated.
- torque CV bolts and axle nut to specs - great time to check the other side if you are doing one

Did you buy the GKN Loebro #300-758?

I replaced the inner CV joint. What a messy project that was and both boots with tons of grease in both. It solved the clunking noise but there is still a grinding noise when under load.

Thinking it's a transmission issue. Changed the fluid and clutch a month ago. May be related. Could be a tensioner though I think its transmission related.

Any thoughts on the grinding noise when under load.

Thanks,

Chris

If you did a new clutch, I have read the new clutch plates use springs instead of rubber and are noisier. Could be that? I am researching clutch for my future replacement as well.
