Engine Hardware - washer type?

As I'm getting all of my hardware in order I'm a bit confused. When looking at the parts diagram or in most of the books washers are labeled "washer" but there are basically 4 different types:

I know for valve covers and most of the exterior covers (oil breather, chain housing, etc.) you use an aluminum crush washer but is there a rule of thumb for what goes where? There is at least one normal washer in the chain housing and then the tongue washers on the oil pump. All of the engine tin bolts have normal washers and then there are a couple of spring washers here and there.

Also, I ordered the hardware kit from pelican and it came with these locking nuts. I'm not sure where they are to be used. Most of the pictures in Bently and the workshop manuals show the lock nuts with the plastic insert.

Waves (spring) washers are used inside the motor with regular nuts, not nyloc
The factory started using the distorted lock nuts on the late Carrera motors. These were a replacement for nyloc nuts
I use regular steel washers on the perimeter of the case.

Great information. Do the distorted nuts damage the stud threads at all?

I believe they can but nuts tend to be softer metal than the studs.
I do replace them with the nyloc style just in case.
