upgrade from Points on a 74
Hey Guys
My Buddy has a 74 911s and although hes a fantastic mechanic , does not spend a lot of time on the internet. Once he gets the idea about something he is away to the races. he asked me if there were any threads anywhere or articles he could read regarding upgrading his points system to something more reliable. Do you guys know of any references ai could send to him ? I will likley help him ( ok learn) as this sounds like a fun small project. Thanks Guys i did a search and a lot of guys upgrading from much earlier cars, but nothing from a middie up.

You can go with a Pertronix setup. I’ve converted early cars, middies, you name it. I like the Pertronix setup and won’t look back.

It seems like Pertronixs is indeed a popular answer. they have a history of being fairly reliable. I did a little digging and found an old thread discussing it in length:

Cdi cars with points are very low maintenance as there is very little current going through the contacts.Points will always get you home unlike if your pertronix fails. I’ve worked on a couple cars with 123 distributors you could check them out especially if his distributor has any wear.

I’ve got stock points on my 74 and they are trouble free. I’ll be shifting to a Bluetooth 123 distributor when I swap in the 2.7 MFI engine as I want to play with settings and curves and I like the idea of using an app to kill the distributor- like a bonus anti theft device

I’ve had Pertronix on a 73 for several years now. It’s my canyon carver here in Colorado. I drive it pretty hard in the mountains. It’s been very reliable

i know this guy well and if he is moving away from points he likely has a good reason for it and has something up his sleeve ![]() i will get him reading the sources you guys provided and let you know if he moves forward with it. Thanks again

Interesting. Pertronix and other electronic ignitions are notoriously unreliable in MGBs...
If it were me I'd go crank trigger with coil packs (I don't like distributors) or the 123ignition distributor, which allows for accurate and tunable advance curves (and I believe remains compatible with CDI). |
