Fuel latch lid closing issue

Ever since I had my 83, when I’m done fueling and go to close the lid, I have to reach inside and pull the release in order to get the lid to latch shut

Is this abnormal?

If yes, what’s the usual cause of this?

I’ve never put force on the fuel lid so I’m not sure if it will latch itself closed if I put some weight into it, not sure how much force is normal etc.

I used to smash it down with my fist, then thought better of it and after a resto, and started using your method as you described.

I just need a slight push on my 89.

Not normal. Should be able to just press it closed.

It may not be normal, but many at this age have the same issue. Continue what you are doing so you don’t mistakenly bend the latch tab.

Is the reason why it doesn’t close normally likely due to a bent latch tab? Everything appears to look normal.

Same here!!! I wouldn't say it's the best design. I'd rather relieve the stress on the assembly in the manner described, which beats the alternative of bending something and not having it latch at all!!!
