Question 996 Oil Change

Hi Guys,

I was at a friends house last night and his friend was there with his '99 996 Carrera. We got to talking about Porsches and where to take them for service. I said I do most of the service myself and he ask if I knew how to change the oil on his car. Trying to help I said lets take a look. WOW! thats a different beast altogether from mine.

I have searched this BB and have found no info on how to do an oil change on this car. Can any of you give me instructions or point me to a tech article on how to change the oil in this car?

Thanks in advance

From what i hear it must be hard cause the porsche dealer i used to live by would charge 300 dollars for an oil change (and no that didn't include a stripper) on the new 996.

Thanks Guys,

But what is the world coming to if you don't get a stripper with every oil change.

Can't be harder than the Boxster:

1. Buy the filter and drain plug crush ring from the dealer
2. Drain old oil (into a BIG pan) and remove old filter
3. Install new filter and oil plug, torque appopriately (see manual, it has the torque spec)
4. Fill with oil (see the manual, it has quantities)

Nuthin' to it. Or at the very least, nuthin' worth paying the dealer $300 to do.

Apparently you don't need to change the oil in a 996 engine.

If you want some grins go to pca.org, zone 10, wichita region,
"THE OIL CHANGE BLUES" it only took three of us five hours
to change the oil in a 993." TIP" leave the back lower engine shroud off for better engine cooling. This only after downloading the instructions from Pelican, there aren't any in the owners manual!! THANKS FOR THE HOW TOO WAYNE!!! The rest of you

wasn't it afJuvat who discovered that the rear main seals are notorious for blowing out and smoking the engine?

Dunno if playing with that thing would be a good idea. I'd let him pay someone else..

I think it was the 996 flywheel seal that has a high failure rate, adn that PCNA are stepping up to fixing them. Recent post on a guy that lunched his 6K mile engine after it dumped its oil this way. New lump courtesy of PCNA.

The 993 oil change is notorious - not complicated, but an access nightmare. The 996 oil change is simplicity itself. Takes no longer than the earlier cars.

YMMV.

I thought 996 engines were disposable and didn't need an oil change!

Just keep driving until it stops and then Porsche AG gives you a new engine!
