Gas Filler Door ?

On both the 911's I've owned I had to pull the release knob to close the gas door and was wondering if this is normal? It seems it should close without pulling the release.
How were they designed to work??
Thanks

I always pull the lever with 1 hand, open/close the door with hand 2. I sort of like it, no wear on the paint or mechanisms...;-)

Mine closes with out pulling the knob. I lubed the snot out of it. I like the idea of pulling the knob though.
