Question Need any info for high-intensity washer conversion

Hi folks,

My windshield washers have never worked all that well despite a bit of tinkering, but I'm reluctant to put too much time into it because I've been considering eliminating the big bottle and pump and going for the conversion I've seen people talk about regarding converting the windshield washer system over to using solely the high intensity parts.

I've spent some time searching for posts and have found a few, but nothing really definitive.

Can anybody post some info on it, such as what parts are actually required and where you got them, exactly how and where the high-intensity bottle is mounted, how you rerouted the lines, any problems you might have experienced, general advice, and mostly PICS?

Thanks for your kind indulgence,

ianc

ianc, if you don't get any responses, PM me and I will take some close up pictures of the factory installation on my '86.

Hey Kurt,

Thanks for the response. Kinda quiet on the home front, so if you want to take and add some shots of your factory setup, that would be pretty excellent. I've read people writing that the HI bottle mounts to an existing point in the tub, but I can't find anything like that in my car. Would be nice to get some shots of how the tank mounts, what the hoses look like, etc.

Thanks again!

Hi AFCuk,

Is that the stock bottle and location for the HI system? I was thinking it was located aft of the fuse panel on the left side, or am I just all wet?

Hi Ian, this is the thread you want:

Washer Resevoir Replacement..........

There is a little 'thumb' on the rear corner of the tank that slots into a pressing behind the turret, then just a clip and screw, two wires, trim one pipe and hey presto, installed. It is easy and a great mod.

Thanks for all the info. Very interested in doing this. One problem though (for me) is getting these parts:

Reservoir: 911 628 027 00
Cap: 911 628 077 00
Pump: 431 955 651
Seal: 431 955 465B

Did a search in pelican and came up dry. Any suggestions? Also what is the pricing on these parts?

Thanks,
Mike

It's a great mod, especially if you don't have the stock system, airflow clearance for the FMOC intrudes into the stock location and you need to pass inspection.

But if the reason your windshield washers don't work well is a clogged check valve and/or clogged washer jets, it might not help much unless you do those at the same time...

You can find them if you go to the "parts diagrams" section.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/PartsLookup/search.cgi?command=show_page&Catalog_Name=911_USA_84_86_KATALOG&Illustration=904-15&Line_Item=2

Not sure if Pelican stocks them, but they can probably order them if they don't.

Reservoir: 911 628 027 00 - $80.66
Cap: 911 628 077 00 - $7.25
Pump: 431 955 651 - $14.75
Seal: 431 955 465B - $9.50

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies!

John, I had seen the thread you referenced above in my research, but did not get a clear picture of the mounting of the tank or a good description of how to plumb the system.

Quote:

I looked for a little pressing in the sheet metal there, but didn't really see anything. Not sure what a 'turret' is or what I'm really looking for... From Kurt's pics (Thanks Kurt!), it looks like there is one screw holding the forward end of the tank on. Did you have to drill this in the tub? Is it just a question of cutting the supply line from the big bottle and routing it to the pressure side of the tank pump?

Where does the pump actually sit? Is it in the tank itself? What is 'Seal: 431 955 465B'?

I have the new check valves at least (nozzles 45$!!!!), but will wait to install them until I do this mod. Would be nice to do it before the rainy season sets in.

Thanks again for the help!

ianc

Ian, there wil be a little oval hole in the area towards the bank of the tank in the pics - that is what the corner of the tank slots in to. The pump is built in to the underside of the tank and taps into the power to your existing pump (by the stock battery location). The line to the jets passes right by where the tank mounts, one snip and you are hooked up. The hole for the front screw and clip for it to tap into is already there. When you get stuck into it it is obvious, trust me!

If no one else can put pics up I will take some of mine for you soon (am cooking dinner as I type).

ianc, if you look at my pictures you see two braided hoses by the high intensity tank. One you can see goes into the tank. The one running past it goes to the other washer container. Like John said, you can just snip it and plug it into your high intensity bottle.

OK guys, I think I'm getting the picture. One last question though: what is the seal? Part # 431 955 465B that's listed above. Does this go between the pump and the tank?

Thanks again,

ianc

Yes, your standard pump seal.

I would just buy the lot from a breaker/used parts outlet, will be cheap and the pumps seem to go on forever.

I'm in the process of ditching the big original washer fluid bottle in the fender i favor of the small bottle from a 1986 with hi-intensity washer system. I've bought the reservoir (911 628 027 00) but I haven't been able to find any info in the Porsche parts diagrams online what kind of insert or bracket that should go into the square hole in the fender. As shown in the pictures above there is a screw going through a tab on the reservoir in to the fender but there is square hole in the body so some kind of insert is needed to screw in to. Does anyone know which part this would be?
