3.2 Progress
Well, the case and top end is back together. Carbs are due in late in the week. Next weekend the engine and trans should go back in. I finally settled on an MSD 6AL with an MSD 8981 Timing Computer for the advance curve...that should be an interesting tuning experience. Hope to hear it run weekend after next. Fingers are crossed!
More details are on my site http://brentwoodrocketscience.com/r2/32assemdetails Jack http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...2503-Pel-a.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...2503-Pel-b.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...2503-Pel-c.jpg |
motor looks great, where did you get the cf shroud and how much?
|
cool engine shroud. what did you use to get the grainy look on the valve covers?
|
The shroud is from AIR.
The wrinkle coating is by VHT. But, it must be baked on for proper adhesion and for the best wrinkle finish. Jack |
You might want to try cleaning that thing up a little before you put it in. It'll be be harder to get a brush on it once it's installed.
I know all the grime and rust won't show when the decklid is closed, but you should show a little pride in all the engineering and design work that went into building that powerplant. If it was a little cleaner, people could see that it's an actual Porsche engine. And clean up that filthy garage, while you're at it. ;) :p |
Jack,
Who is AIR? I'd love to get more details on the carbon fiber shroud. JG |
JG
American International Racing is the name of the company and their site is: www.americaninternationalracing.com/ They make a lot of reproduction body parts for Porsches. I actually bought two of the shrouds with AIR being the last one. The first one was of poor quality regardless of the money which I returned. I am very pleased with the AIR product. The fit and finish is very nice. You do have to do some final trimming and fitting as well as drilling of the holes for the mounting screws but not the manifolds. I was surprised how easy CF is to work with...much easier than fiberglass. Jack |
I've got a wife I'd swap for that engine! Probably wouldn't be a fair swap though (I think she needs a service, and I'm too busy working on my car :D)
|
Jack:
She's a "beaut"!!! I think that you have made some really interesting and tasteful changes in the cosmetic appearance of your engine. I really like the CF shroud and the wrinkle finish on the other pieces. Can't wait to see the finished product. What will the engine and car be used for? Street, auto-x, track, or other? What's the estimated HP going to be? Great job and definitely post more pictures when you get them. :) |
That is one good looking engine. Nice work!!

What a nice looking motor, yet what a crappy engine stand!

Doug,
I see you have an RS replica too. The 3.2 is going into my RS replica that I built a 2.7 for two years ago with the help of a lot of Pelicans. I sold the 2.7 to a local guy who's going to install it in a 914. My car will be for street and DE...We're moving to Atlanta in July and I do hope to do some laps at Road Atlanta. With my ignition and PMO's I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and put the car on a chassis Dyno to properly dial everything in. So, we'll get an accurate HP and torque report out of that event. I'll share the data when we get through that process. Jack http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/p-1lo.jpg |
Before you go to Atlanta, let that puppy loose at Willow Springs! I'll drive the chase vehicle. :)
|
Jack,
Beautiful work! Been wondering how you were doing and how you were staying busy now that you were working on the 911 and not the Land Cruisers all the time. Oops, just looked at the website and you mention building more Land Cruisers! Where do you find the time? Boy the innards of the 3.2 look nice and bet it works well in the RS! Cannot wait to see it completed! Joe A |
Jack (Mc), what/where are the headers from. I've no need for heaters here in Oz, so I've often thought about "proper" headers for my car.
Thanks |
Joe,
Thanks...By the way, time is tight these days. I am pushing on the 3.2 just to get it back in the car ASAP so I don't have to move it in boxes. I went to work last year as head of mfg. for a Dept. of Defense supplier. We make mil-spec combat boots and as you might guess, we've been out flat lately. So, the 3.2 is the last of the big projects for a while and I just haven't updated the Land Cruiser area of the site, but no more of them in the forseeable future. It's probably time to just drive one of these projects and leave it alone for as long as it will go...and fast I hope. The 3.2 is pretty much new from the case out, so I hope it is good to go for many miles and a long time... John, I sold the 2.7 that was in my car and kept the headers as they wouldn't work in the new owner's 914 transplant. I kind of ran out of time to research and deal with new ones so I had mine (which are Bursch) ceramic coated at Jet Hot. They only had 3k miles on them. They strip them to the bare metal and coat them inside and out. I had a set of headers coated by them for one of the Land Cruisers and they never turned blue or rusted which the Bursch products do in about 500 miles. They are 1-5/8" ID tubes which were recommended for the 46mm PMO's by Richard Parr. The entire exhaust system may need some attention after I get through the relocation. We'll see. Catch all of you later in the week off to the boot mines this morning... Jack |
I cant wait for you to get to Atlanta. We will have some fun!!! Where is your duck tail? looks great besides that.....:-))
|
Jack,
Wish I was closer and would help you move. On the other hand, Atlanta in the summer is worse than a sauna. Put it off until October and we might just pitch a hand and have a moving party! Joe |
Any more progress?
How much did the CF shroud from AIR cost? Regards, Karl |
wow - great looking motor. I love the shroud.
