Powder Coating the Tub...

Had a fun Sat. Got the tub powder coated and rough primed. Really like the finish and boy is it durable. I tied the car down and never scratched the finish.

from the looks of it, you powdercoated the tub and then primered over the powdercoat? great idea.

Well I hope you like the color you chose, it looks like it's gonna be there for a long time. Nice way to go.

We actually sanded off the overspray of powder coat we got on the exterior panels. I've had several people tell me it's not a good idea to overcoat the powder. Plus they say there are some adhesion problems for bondo over powder. We'll see, as time will tell. The thing I really like about the powder is it goes everywhere, As in down the tunnels and every nook and cranny.

Randy- Yes the tub was bare, not a thing in it. Did leave one plastic plug in it by mistake, it's now a glob of plastic. BTW I'm doing an american autowire harness.

Looks like he plugged the right holes (for throttle, clutch, etc.) with the heatproof plugs, and it looks like the chassis was completely stripped. Nice job. Care to share expense too?

Powder was $125 and labor was alot of beer.

911teo's tub stripping and coating is imminent (mexico blue) followed by a slate gray job, and a third car, color undecided.

Did you use slate gray as well?
or a shelf powder?

any downsides that you can see?

how did you strip your tub before hand?

Keith- We ordered a special color, #7024 from Dupont. It's a color I've used before. So far no downsides, even the threads in the chassis are cleaning out better than when I've painted chassis'. Not sure my neighbor will want to do anymore, but I'll ask him. It's not a fun job. And yes we did the inside of the fenders. And I used the torch and scraper method to take the undercoating off, WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN.

Is this going to be a race car? That's the only way I would use a Non-Porsche wire harness. From a diagnosis and resale standpoint you will be better off sticking with the factory IMHO.

This has to be the most cost-effective DIY project of the year. Great job.

Yea my wife says I'm frugal. And BTW I counted over 30 bare wires in my old harness and the new harness has it's own schematic. American autowire are the best people've worked with, well besides Pelican of course.

Kieth- If you work at Euroworks, My wife and I stopped in a couple of months ago. Really liked the place. I'm a fabricator @ MB2.

Jeff- It's an off the shelf number, RAL7024. But it had to be shipped in from Germany. The last 13 pounds of it in the US was bad.

I've also thought about this. Biggest problem I've come accross is finding someone in S. FLA with a big enough baker. Also, since you can't bake bondo the panels have to be almost brand new to use.
