East coast R-Gruppe?
Anyone in the southeast interested in starting a right coast faction? I am a PCA member but have only hung out with those guys once and that was too much. Meeting up regularly with some fellow Porsche-philes would be great. Any real R-Gruppers please chime in and advise. Honestly, i have never known wheather R-Gruppe was an actual organization or just a state of mind.
Cheers, Paul

I'm game. It seems we should have started this a while ago.

When I first got my car I emailed Cris Huergas to learn more about the group. I kind of decided at the time that the car probably did not qualify but my ideas did. I think I might contact him again now that I have taken the car to a different level. Although since it still has a stock 2.4 I'm still not sure it meet the standards of a hot rod.
But yes, I would like to be involved if we can do it. Check out the RGruppe site for more. Tom

Hi Paul, please contact Cris Huergas about your idea. The R Gruppe is a loose knit club with one person in charge of membership, so he is guy to talk with about this. I have emailed you his contact info.

Funny, I e-mailed Cris Huergas yesterday about exactly this topic. After my first PCA meeting (Boxster, yawn, 996, yawn) I figured there has got to be some sort of club for older cars that avoids the, "I own a Porsche because it goes with my third wife's boob job" crowd.
I'm just south of Philadelphia, and I'd love to talk to any early 911 owners in the area! |

Paul, count me in. Watching who posts to this BB, where they are and what they drive, I would guess that there are more than enough early cars for a terrific gathering. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I had thought about this a few years ago and was held back by personal obligations. I had talked to Cris Huergas about this briefly and I love the concept of the R Gruppe, but I like a little more involvement and structure. Cris has done a fabulous job on the club and his car, as with all of the cars in the group, are wonderful. I would also push for the 912 and 914 crowd as member involvement. Part of the problem on the East Coast, especially the Northeast, was that our climate patterns are not condusive to a year round club of this nature. Obviously, Atlanta going south has a longer club cycle because the weather is much better year round. California and the south eastern states are really the ideal venue for clubs of this nature!
I had already charted out the club and how it would be maintained with events, shop courses, race days, etc. I was building out a schedule for concours and restoration meetings at quality shops in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Boston. In all, I had about 100 responses showing genuine interest over the course of about two weeks. I was also going to build out a website to include all of my factory documentation no longer being produced as a scanned in extra for members of the club. I have an extensive library of internal factory manuals from 1966 to 1973... primarily on "S", "R", and "RS" factory upgrades and tuning. I talked to Porsche about my documentation and they seemed to not care about me putting up on the site since they are no longer being published and there is no availablity. This situation is still not out of the question for me to set up, but I was holding off until the wife and I moved out of Manhattan so we could meet at my home for tuneup sessions, etc. I am open to all ideas moving forward. By the way, all would be welcome from the bone stock to the radical. 70flatsix, your car is one of my favorites and as with any early Porsche, it would welcome. I would be interested, but it seems the east coast is an awfully long coastline to get everyone together.
Maybe it could be split once again to NE and SE?

Great response! Given the areas that everyone lives in, there would deffinately have to be north and southeast groups. We could use the Mason Dixon line as the border. Hee-Hee. I think anything below DC is in the South but obviously anyone would be welcome anywhere.
VIR is a great place to meet, it is fairly centrally located and i see lots of guys from the DC area up there. I am going to email Cris right now and run it by him. If anyone hears anything or has any ideas feel free to email me or post again. Cheers, Paul

I'd be in for a north east membership and I'll speek for a friend in SC (not on the Pelican boards yet) if you'll allow a few mid-motor cars/ owners.

I think this R GRUPPE is getting much bigger than Cris (and Freeman) ever envisioned. I pray it doesn't get away from them. Methinks PCA officialdom should think about this string. That is, if any of them should read it. (BTW, I've belonged to PCA for 35 years+) Member of R Gruppe less years. PCA ought to think about things..a lot of things.

My first PCA experience was a group drive up to VIR. My father, who isnt a car nut but likes to ride in mine, went with me. I didnt know anyone in the PCA but figured it would be good to meet some. We showed up at the meeting place and people were talking and being friendly to each other but not one person bothered saying a damn thing to people who were obviously newcomers.
The only other event was last years Christmas party at Foreign Cars Italia and i only went to that because an acquaintance had his 917K there along with a 917/30. I hope someone from the PCA does read this post and realizes that Boxter and 996 owners are not the only Porsche owners. Off the soapbox, Paul

An east coast gruppe would be great.
A group event scheduled around the 2003 Hershey Swap meet pilgrimage could be an idea. BTW, what are the "qualifications" for the RGruppe? Chuck
