Rolex Monterey Classic-NO RACING ON SUNDAY THIS YEAR

In years past there was racing on Saturday and Sunday. Not this year. They are trying a new formula because of conflict with Sunday's Pebble Beach Concours. I assume there will now be racing on Friday but don't know. This would conflict with Werks Reunion!! Just be aware of this significant change.

This has been common knowledge since August 2021 and should come as a surprise to no one who is planning to show and/or race. I guess Pebble will be even more crowded than normal? Or maybe more people depart Saturday night or Sunday morning? I know my crew are all heading home Saturday this year.

Also the Carmel Concours on the Avenue, normally held on the Tuesday before the Historics, has been cancelled.

I read on that Sunday Laguna Seca will have a Hill climb.
I'd go opposite direction up the hill just to do it.
My #10 Camaro will be in the pits till noon Sunday anyways.

What's old is new again. The first few years I went to Monterey it was practice on Friday and races on Saturday. Sunday was Pebble. Those were the only two events. The first year I went up with a friend spur of the moment (that's a whole 'nother story!) and we pulled onto Fremont street Saturday morning and the third motel had a vacancy sign. I can remember walking the field at Pebble at 9am and it was empty of spectators, the cars weren't even all in place yet. Then came the auctions. Then Concorso at Quail Lodge and the tsunami started.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Renames Participant Parking at
Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to Honor Phil Hill

MONTEREY, Calif., June 7, 2022 — Recognizing one of America’s greatest drivers and gentleman of the sport, Phil Hill will be celebrated by the renaming of the hillside participant parking to “Phil Hill” for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Aug. 17-20 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Hill was an annual participant and visitor to Monterey since the inception of historic racing, that was then-called the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. He was a fixture in the paddock and track, driving Aston Martins, Ferraris and a big Blower Bentley in historic competition.

Hill was the first American to win the Formula One World’s Drivers Championship (driving for Ferrari in 1961), and a 14-time entrant and three-time overall winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is celebrating the kickoff to a yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of the world’s most famous sports car race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“John Lamm was a dear friend of Phil’s, and John and I talked for hours about Phil and his achievements,” explains Barry Toepke, director of heritage events and public relations at WeatherTech Raceway. “John and I always thought we need to do something that would honor him, but also make him chuckle a little. Thus, with the gracious permission of Alma Hill and Derek Hill, we debut ‘Phil Hill.’”

“Laguna Seca was always one of my father’s true home tracks and my memories of attending and racing there always were shared with my father’s presence,” says Derek Hill. “From his first races at Laguna Seca back in the ‘60s when he won in Can Am to his post-retirement years racing competitively in historic cars, this track was always a staple in the family summer calendar. He was there for me when I clinched the Barber Dodge Pro Series Championship and I’ll never forget getting to drive him around at speed in a Maserati MC12 several months before he passed away. It would be his last time experiencing taking high speed laps on any circuit, a day he thoroughly enjoyed. To have the very familiar hillside participant parking fittingly named after him is a wonderful way to honor his legacy and to maintain a gentle reminder to all the fans, participants and teams alike who arrive at the circuit."

Each Rolex Reunion participant will receive a commemorative parking tag that features one of the most iconic images taken of Hill. Shot by photography legend the late Jesse Alexander, who was on the scene during the Golden Age of motorsport. The image of Hill was captured after a dominating win at the Grand Prix of Italy in what would be the last Grand Prix victory for a front-engined Ferrari.

“There isn’t a more fitting photographic tribute to Phil and longtime friend Jesse than to use this image, which his lovely wife Nancy agreed,” Toepke adds. “Jesse had an uncanny knack for capturing a person’s inner feelings and bring them to life in print.”

“Jesse would be delighted about the hillside area being named for Phil,” said Nancy Alexander. “They became good friends in Italy so many years ago, which later grew to include both of our families in the States. Phil’s sense of humor and wonderful stories always made me laugh. I am pleased to share this image, taken at Monza in 1960, just one of Jesse’s many photos of Phil.”

Something new, a reverse direction hill climb.

From the promoters...

You’re invited to a very special Party in the Paddock and Laguna Seca’s inaugural “Corkscrew” Hillclimb on Sunday, Aug. 21. The day features an entirely new experience that we hope you’ll find relaxing and just plain fun. It’s a time for Rolex Reunion participants to come together and enjoy catching up, seeing others’ cars and have a chance to participate in the first-ever Hillclimb!

Yes, it’s your opportunity to drive the track in reverse direction, racing your historic race car, or other of your choosing, against the clock. Envision going opposite direction, taking a hard right at Turn 11 and accelerate up the Corkscrew to a checkered flag finish just after cresting. There will be two sessions, followed by a People’s Choice to select the final five in a shootout.

What better way to conclude a week of road racing than enjoying a day sharing a few laughs with friends, volunteers and our community? You’ll also get to see one of the largest gatherings of Pagani hypercars in the paddock, and unwind with 400-500 Cars & Coffee visitors after the hustle and bustle of Car Week.

This day is designed for you and is an important one for improving community support of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and the planned projects. You can put your tools and gear away and just enjoy what the Rolex Reunion is all about: great people and great cars. Paddock move-out will begin at 2:00, yet cars and rigs may stay through Monday at noon for your convenience.

We hope you will enjoy the music, food and beverages, and a continued relaxed celebration of all forms of motorsport through the inaugural Hillclimb.
