installing R tail light panels/housings???

just received my R tail light housings/panels and cked the fit. for those who have installed these on their cars i have a few questions:

1 it seems i need to grind down the lip of the tail lights housing on the BODY of the car to insert them. the yellow arrows indicate the parts of the R panels which are too big to insert. is this true? have others had to alter the body of their car to insert the R panels?

2 in re: to mounting screws, i have seen them mounted in the same way the OE lights mount indicated by the blue dots. i have also seen them mounted by mounting into the lip in 3 areas indicated by the red dots. these panels have so much flex/bow that it seems they should be mounted in 3 areas. at first i thought the panles were too short but realised they have so much flex to them and need to be "uncurled". once stretched they contour the body.

so any feedback would help. tia.

When you find out let me know....I have a set coming as well.

When I mounted my RS rear bumper I almost shat myself when I realized that I had to sawzall the rear reflactor assembly out of the middle of my SC.....

Mike,

Are you going with the front lights and the real early fenders as well?

Agree about cutting the rear section off... was not for the faint of heart and after doing this there is no going back! Cannot want for the new rear bumper (arrives tomorrow) and to get back on the road!

Who's panels are they?

bob tilton 05-27-2003 10:03 PM

jack - the panels were sourced from Rennspeed Motorsport. peter specified that they were for the SWB.

mike - that's a definite yes to grinding? i am guessing aboit 3/16" both top and bottom lip around the yellow arrow sections only? where did you get your set from?

also - i recall seeing a seal on a car but can't remember where. may have been one of emory's cars. is anyone running a seal?

tia.

911R reference photos

The following photos show the tail lights of 11899001R (BP car) and 11899011R, both use the regular screw mounting points. Note the fit of the plastic units, not the best. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/File_14.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/taillights1.jpg
hope this helps, I don't think I would cut the fender, but I would try and trim the fiberglass parts to fit, and use the standard tail light screw mounting tabs..

great close-ups ernie! judging from those pics those screws are drilled perpendicular to the body - not at angle like the orig tail lights. are new holes drilled into the base of the orig attachment points and not utilizing the orig holes? need to see my car again but it's in another location.

also, the fibreglass panels are so thin i am not sure about reducing fibreglass to fit.
