G-50 Noise

My 89 Carrera with the G_50 makes a lot of noise when hot. I replaced the trans oil while doing a clutch change 6 months ago. I used Mobil One Synthetic gear oil. Its very loud while under load particularly if under 3 k RPMS and floored. It sounds like the noise all of them make when under 1k rpms and floored, you all should know what I am talking about. It only does it when hot. I replaced all the CV's, mounts and checked the gear oil is topped off.

Thinking maybe a different or thicker gear oil?

Thanks,

Chris

I noticed the Swepco 201 is a bit thicker 80/90 while most others are 75/90. I think the manual calls for a straight 90

Thanks,

Chris

You induce gear rattle when you lug.
Are you sure its not detonation?

Has the noise increased with the change from rubber centred clutch plate to a spring plate?

Yes the noise started after the clutch install but I don't think its the clutch. I cant make it make the noise unless under load so I dont think its detonation. I also just replaced the plugs and they look fine. I have considered chain tensioners but I always go back to the trans. Its a stock engine with SW chip, cat delete and two out muffler, so the engine should be as efficient as it can be. It runs at normal temps, 120k miles burns no oil.

I looked but there does not seem to be any good straight 90 w gear lubs. Think I will try the Swepco as its a bit thicker then the 75/90 Mobile One.

It’s not the gear oil unless you under filled it.

The spring type clutch makes more gear noise.
Detonation occurs when under load.
G50uses synthetic oil
Keep it over 3k RPM

all good advice. Will see what happens with the Swepco 201. Otherwise will live with it until something breaks as I dont know what else to do.

You could always pull an oil sample and send it in for analysis. We use Blackstone at work. I think retail cost is $30/sample.

@cmcfaul, you havent described the sound being made; "makes a lot of noise" covers a vast area. Maybe make a video of the sound of your car when it's cold and not making the sound, and then hot when it is. Then post that up here (youtube or similar link). This may help narrow the field a bit.

Limited slip dif

I have a G50. I do not have a limited slip differential. I use Redline 75/90NS which is for the No Slip dif. It works well for me. Swepco is for the 915 transmissions. G50 needs synthetic gear oil. That’s all I got for ya, my .02c.

This is my inclination, but as another poster says we don’t really have a solid description of the noise. It’s a known entity that taking out the rubber centered clutches increases the gearbox noise.

Matt,
Are you aware of anyone still making rubber centred plates for G50 cars? From what I can see we seem to be stuck with spring centred ones nowadays.

The noise is an amplified version of the noise they all make when lugged. Not sure what causes the noise but its not a good sound (grinding). it also feel like the lash (I think its called) is too big. I have to shift just right or it bangs into gear when the clutch is released.

Yeah, I'd like to know as well if my '88 ever needs a new clutch...

Never heard of another rubber centered clutch. Porsche did it for NVH, but once they started exploding they realized it was a bad idea.

Grinding is never good. There is something bigger at play here for sure.
