sport muffler

I just compleated installing SSIs and a used sport muffler on my '78 SC. The sport muffler is the one with two pipes comming straight out the back. What is the length of the two exhaust pipes? The ones on my muffler have been cut to a rather short length and looks kind of stupid. I'm thinking of replacing the muffler pipes with megaphones. Has anyone here ever done or seen/heard a muffler modified like this?
The sport muffler realy changed the sound, the wife says it does not sound like a Porsche anymore. I have not been able to drive it yet because I'm waiting on rear shocks, just pulling out of the garage the rear realy bounced. I also need to reset the idle mixture now with the new exhaust, before I do much driving.
thanks

I think they are supposed to be sort of long. Maybe 8-12". I think they are too long myself. I also think the sport muffler is too loud. People around here get noise tickets when leaving the local auto-x. Not the Harleys though.

I dont have a digital camera, however just pretend Andy's has an SC script instead of a Carrera and it looks just like mine except my pipes stick out even with the bumper.
Good looking car Andy.

I betcha that carbs and a cam with some overlap would sound really nice.. I love the gas stink from carbs in the morning.

and I guess if you keep the car rolling the tail will stay clean w/short pipes..........Ron

could I modify one of these for sport action?

I've got three of these...not in use

how hard do you think it would be to mod. this? Similar to the flowmaster deal?

The others are in better shape (the only pic I could find)

I have the Sport muffler on my SC. I trimmed the pipes to be even with the rear bumper pads. Then, to quiet it down a bit, I installed some exhaust baffles I bought from the local Harley shop. They help a lot with the day to day driving, but can easily be removed for track use. The sound gives me wood Finally, I added a set of the chrome tips. Adds a nice finishing touch.

yes, you can use rust reducer on the muffler, and then put the Eastwood non-paint exhaust coating on it in black or grey.

Follow the directions in one of the UpFixing's to add a 2nd pipe or make into pure sport muffler.

You know, from looking at the sport muffler pics that you guys posted, i'd assume that trimming up the base of the muffler and then welding on megaphones would be a posibility. Having said that, it would look god offly stupid, and the benefits of megaphones have to do with race headers and adding more top end at the expense of low end and mid range. If they are being mounted after the muffler like you mentioned, then there are no benefits, just the look of it. Although i'll admit that i worked with a gentleman who made a 934 style down pipe for his 930, then on the end of the pipe, he welded a single megaphone on. It sounded evil and shot 3-4 foot flames with his new hot cams installed, but that's besides the point, cause even that one still looked a little goofy.

For a second I thought that your picture was of my garage. The only difference is my 911 is red (without the big bumpers) and our Odyssey is green.

Deja Vu!

I have the sport muff. and just cut off the tips relatively short. Looks real nice (sorry no digi. camera), and sounds mean as hell. The sport muff has a low gurgle at idle and sounds like a race car throught he rpm range. Get one.

Brad, I like the idea of the baffles. I'll probably do that. The sound to me is just fine, however I have not done any driving with it yet. I had my rear shocks revalved, and have not gotten them back yet. I was going to take it for a ride around the block but it bounced like crazy just moving it out of the garage. The exhaust pipes are too short, so I was just wondering if any had welded megaphones in there place. I thought someone on the board had done it or was considering it at one time.
Thanks for the photos

How long are your tips?

I ended up purchasing some Samson Exhaust 10" baffles from the local Harley shop. I had trim to 9.5" for a good fit. A 1/4" hole is drilled in the exhaust pipe at the muffler end for the set screw.

You could always add length by using a chrome or black *tip*.

Wait til you are driving next to a wall or center divider. It's a SWEET sound. You can actually hear both pipes coming into harmony. I took the baffles out at the track and got a lot of positive comments, even from the Honda guys...

Hahaha, too funny...

I may lose the pads, but I'll keep the Odyssey silver. Maybe I'll put a Sport muffler on it, thought. Have you seen those stickers that say *Porsche support vehicle*? Thinking about one....
