Years ago, I had a wealthy friend who spent a year installing in his Aston Martin DB4, a twin to my own car at the time, the engine that Aston had prepared for the Indy 500 (this was mid-'60s). As I remember, the Aston racecar didn't even qualify for the 500, but Walter bought the engine, and one bitter-cold day in January, he wheeled the car out of his shop and tried to start it. Pump pump pump, he pretty quickly flooded it. Kept trying to start it and finally it fired. Literally. Burned to the ground, leaving little more than a puddle of aluminum, which was what DB4s and their engines were pretty much entirely made of. Never turned a wheel on his one-of-a-kind car.

We took the 911 with it's new engine out for the first time a couple of weeks ago. About 4-5 minutes from home, my buddy said we really should have a fire extinguisher with us. We turned around and got one. Glad we didn't have to use it.

note to self - install halon fire extinguisher that's been sitting in garage for five years....what's the realistic shelf life of a halon fire extiguisher? I've heard thay can't be refilled anymore since halon is an ozone depleting gas.

Yeah, great idea but where to get one? Halon is now only manufactured in very limited quantities in a fit of government overregulation. Halotron is the replacement but last time I checked neither could be shipped (haz. mat.)...

Anyone know where to buy / if it can be shipped?

Thanks!

12 years is the shelf life of a Halon unit. You can have them refilled, they just use recycled agent, from large systems that have switched to other agents such as Haltron.

They can be shipped by ground only. If you want a Halon extinguisher, give Pelican a call. They carry them.

Not to throw salt in his wounds ( I don't mean it to offend him), but ask Lothar what kind of extinguisher he had when his car burned up.

The discussion of what type of extinguisher to carry has been covered & debated here many times. Do a search if you are so inclined to see some of it. But any type is better than none.
