![]() ![]() This is not cheap, so I don't know if anyone else may be interested, but we have started a job this week on installing a 300hp 996 motor in a customer's 911SC. It means converting the chassis to water cooling. Not such a big deal since the V8 guys have done so much on this already. A fresh 300hp 996 motor in a crate runs about $12k. This is a relative bargain compared to the cost of building an air cooled equivalent. ![]() If anyone is interested, please email me. We think we can do the whole install for about $20k total with your old motor as trade-in. Len@autosportengineering.com ![]() |

I saw this photo in a different post and assumed it was a photoshop job. This will be quite an accomplishment, as running the radiator lines to the front (in a street car) isn't enough of a task.
Several years back, Sol at Perfect Power, installed a GT3R motor in Philip Colin's Fabcar...at least in a track car you have the ease to run the lines through the car, though it was still a monumental task locating radiators and such. ![]()

Mmm... Kelly Moss did a nice one- a "470 hp" GT3-R motor in a 993.
![]() More images on their site. I'm not sure water cooling is worth the hassle for 300 hp. The extra weight involved and cost of fitting seems to offset the cheaper motor cost. At 400+ hp, however, you're starting to run out of reliable air cooled n.a. options... |

This is not new... How many early cars have later model engines in them?
But the idea of running a 400odd HP NA engine in a car weighing less than 1000kgs is exciting to say the least. As far as coolant lines and radiators... All of that stuff is available off the shelf and it's not heavy by any measure. (The coolant would weigh more then the pipes and radiators) It would be relatively easy to build a car lighter than a late model 930 using water power. Now that's something to dream about. "470 hp" GT3-R motor!!!! Yikes ![]() |

Not that it's really relevant at all in terms of hp/performance... but the water-cooled motors sure aren't sexy to look at.. Just a lump!

These weights not all from the same source, so are probably not apples to apples. These first three are published from Porsche, so should be comparable:
1997 Boxster M96/20 402 lbs "dressed" 2003 996 M96/05 449 lbs "dressed" 2005 997 M97/01 444 lbs "dressed" The following was weighed on a corner weight scale, two different scales used were within ~2 lbs: 2003 GT3 Supercup dressed with stock flywheel, clutch and exhaust: 480 lbs 2003 GT3 Supercup no exhaust, no FW: 408 lbs The above includes the engine mounted oil tank, which is mounted on the car for the air cooled motors and weighs 12 lbs for the GT3. A 993 VRam motor w/o flywheel or exhaust weighs 351 lbs on the same scale, comparable to 396 lbs for the cup motor without the oil tank. Figure another 5 lbs for water in the motor itself gives you a 50 lb difference for a GT3 cup vs an air cooled car. You then need to add the difference between the water vs oil cooling stuff. The M96/ M97 street motors look a little lighter than the cup motor. -Pete |

I can understand a GT3 motor that is based on the 964 case and its proven toughness. But why would someone want to put a 996 motor in their 911? The 996 motors are known to be inferior and suffer from a poorly supported crank (thus the RMS failures). Seems like a step backwards to me.

Any updates? I would be really interested in how you are mating this motor to the 915 gearbox?

Wouldn't a V8 crate motor make more power and cost less?

![]() ![]() Yes it would, but.......... Some old guys like me want to push their Porsche with a Porsche. The new 4-valve motors are very powerful, emit "0" polution, and give better fuel mileage. I am looking forward to driving this myself. Len ![]() |
