reconditioning wiper switch

The wiper switch for my 1977 3.0 Carrera Targa is malfunctioning. New ones cost over $AUD500 so I'd like to recondition it. Does anyone know how to do this? If so please reply so I can give it a go.

Oops, wiper not turn… :)

What’s the symptom? I think different problems have different solutions

Mine doesn’t turn off once they are running, unless you cut the ignition. Haven’t figured out what that is.

Do the wipers just stop and don't return to the parked position? If so, try pulling on the switch arm, along the line of the steering column. (Towards you.) Do they then park correctly? If so, the fix is fairly easy.

Undo the plastic clam shell hiding everything. You should then be able to see the "reed" switches the arm should actuate. Now that you can see the reeds, watch what happens when you tug on the arm and they park correctly. That is the contact that should be happening when you return the arm to the off position. (Easier/clearer for you to watch and understand, than for me to describe it and confuse you.)

Once you see how they should work, just use a small needle nose to gently tweak the reed(s) to get them to make contact, like they used to.

Hope this matched your symptoms.

On my list of To Do's.

I also think this "fault" is the root cause of most problems with the intermittent wiper feature.

Do this only AFTER disconnecting the battery... of course, then make an adjustment and reconnect; disconnect, adjust, reconnect as necessary. (BTW, I found a flat blade screwdriver for adjusting the switch "reeds" works well, and a little emory paper to clean the contacts helps).
