Any windshield installers here?

I have my 86 at the Porsche dealer for a windshield. The first installer did a terrible job and used adhesive. Now it's back there again and another installer is giving it a go. He is having a hard time not having gaps where the seal is against the car.

Is there a trick to it?

Yes, there is a method to get the corner of the rubber pushed into the corner of the frame. There are many threads on this if you search. I use a notched piece of wood and a hammer to push the metal insert in the rubber to drive it outward into the corners.

Hope this helps,

Rahl

In addition to the method stated by Rahl, the factory also used dum-dum, strip-caulk, whatever you want to call it to allow the seal to fit properly in the corners.

I do them myself, no help, with dum-dum in the corners, silicone spray and parachute cord. Long arms help. The glass shop gets rears with the annoying wiring and targa rears.

Any windshield installers here?

I did both front and back (with the defrost wires) by myself. Not that hard when you understand the process.

Here’s my write up (post 929 in my thread)

I’m about to install a new windshield in my ‘84. I think I understand the process after spending a few hours here and on You Tube (esp. the importance of properly shaping the trim to match the contours of the glass). Just not sure about how/where to place dum-dum in the corners. Anyone have a photo showing how that should be done?

Guess I'm a sucker for punishment, I even do the targa rear by myself.

Placing the rubbers seals in the sun for a few hours helps relax the seal. Even with a seal at room temperature, it retains a lot of memory from the pack and doesn’t want to conform to its new shape as easily as one that is warm.

No mention by anyone as to which window seal to purchase? I know I've seen the recommendation previously but don't recall which model/part no.

Genuine Porsche. Don’t bother with aftermarket seals. Just get the legit ones.

They are using a Porsche OEM seal.
Did I read somewhere that the seal for G body has been discontinued and substituted with a 964 seal?

The 964 seal was used on the 89 Carrera as well as the 964 during the 89 production run as they changed the flanges for front, side and rear window openings to 13mm vs 9mm due to production line changes (robots). This allowed for the redesign of the seals that didn't use a metal insert/trim frame. I think that some people have used these seals on earlier cars to get rid of the window trim. The earlier seal that requires the trim frame is still available.

Update.
Windshield was installed.
Service manager inspected it to find 1 corner not seated properly and a rip in the seal.
New seal has been ordered and they will try again.
So painful just knowing they are hacking at my car and have had it for a week.
