"gear slap"

I recently had my tranny swapped for a rebuilt one. After only 30 miles I started hearing a "thudding" noise as I was decelerating in 2nd gear. I brought it back to the mechanic who said it was "a bit of gear slap and not to worry about it", (he did say the parts were under 6 month warranty and to let him know if it got worse or bothered me - he seems like a stand-up-guy). Anyway, after about 2k miles, just today, I noticed the sound has gone away. Weird; I'm just a bit curious if others have experianced this?

The funny thing is, it took me about 1500 miles (since tranny swap) to stop worrying about the car and to just drive it like I stole it (redline it 2-3x per day on my drive home, kick it hard into corners, etc.) and now EVERYTHING seems to be working better!
