My first 3D print project for my 911

I bought my 85 911 back in 1995, and I have put over 100,000 miles on it, driven it to 41 states and Canada. Many 12 hour days driving 850 to 900 miles.

I like to have a bottle of water handy. My car came with a cassette tape holder that I had no use for, so I removed it.

This was a handy place to keep a bottle of water, but of course it rolled around, and was sometimes hard to get out when in 5th gear.

The age of 3D printing is here.

So I wanted a box that would slide into that square hole, and hold my water bottle, and be had space for spray foam to use as a insulation and help keep the water cool.

This is my first attempt at it. The bottom of the central locking button plate had two little tabs that hung down. They had to be something to do with the cassette tape storage box. I just used my dremel to grind off the tabs, and the box has a nice snug fit.

I bought a can of the spray foam, and filled up the bottom.

The back of the box, and the areas to fill with foam.

After it stopped expanding and hardened. I had covered the outside and front of the box with blue masking tape to keep the foam off of the parts I did not want foam stuck to.

Trimmed off with a utility knife.

Again as a test, I painted the plastic with the special plastic paint that I had color matched to my interior.

You can see the front of the plastic is a little oddly shaped, as it was the first part printed, and the media table left some marks and not flat areas. This is a prototype, and I was not going to reprint it just for that.

This is the way it looks in place, and holding a standard bottle of water. It will be interesting to find out how long it keeps the water cold. It is designed to point the water bottle to the left to make it easy to get to. The transmission is in 5th gear in the photo.

I will move the hole for the bottle to the down and right about 1/4 inch to the right to make the edge a bit smother. And I will figure out how to get the front of the box smooth. I may even embed a logo in the face of it just to break up the flat surface.

Just tinkering with a toy.
